Fantasy Baseball: Week 13 Guide

Corey Dickerson (OF) Colorado Rockies

Corey Dickerson has capitalized on the Rockies injuries.

The end of week 13 will put you at the midpoint of the 2014 regular season for baseball and like the first quarter point, now is a good time to reassess your team.

This week will bring many teams seven games and in the case of the Phillies, they’ll be hitting the eight-game mark. Like all of our weekly guides, we’ll bring you links from around the fantasy world to help prepare you for all the player combinations you can think of.

THE FAKE BASEBALL: FANTASY PITCHING PLANNER – WEEK 13

Looking at splits, park effects and opponents’ offenses, Greg Smith (The Fake Baseball) does his best to accurately rank players for the week ahead. There will always be debate over who the top dog is, but Clayton Kershaw‘s no-no simply keeps him at the top of the list for the upcoming week. As for the some of the others that make Smith’s list of top two-start pitchers, have a look below. For all of Smith’s two-start pitchers broken down by tiers, be sure to visit The Fake Baseball.

Top Dog

1. Clayton Kershaw (@KC, STL)

2. Felix Hernandez (BOS, CLE)

3. Chris Sale (@BAL, @TOR)

4. Zack Greinke (@KC, STL)

Sale has been flying under the radar a bit due to injury time, but the lefty has been quietly dominant with a 2.20 ERA and a 10.33 K/9. He’ll take the mound in two hitter friendly parks this week, but he should pass the test.

Sons of Thunder

5. C.J. Wilson (MIN, @KC)

6. Jordan Zimmerman (@MIL, @CHC)

7. Alex Cobb (PIT, @BAL)

8. Tim Hudson (SD, CIN)

9. Homer Bailey (@CHC, @SF)

None of these guys look as great compared to the top dogs, but Tim Hudson is the most worrisome out of the bunch. His regression over the past couple of games probably isn’t a fluke, but he has upside as he’ll face two struggling offenses at home in week 13.

CBS SPORTS: START AND SIT HITTERS FOR WEEK 13

Week 13 will brings Manny Machado‘s name into the picture again as his appeal was heard this weekend. You’ll likely want to find another option at third base this week, but for some good news, Neil Walker is expected to join the Pirates on Tuesday after having an appendectomy two weeks ago. That doesn’t mean put him in your lineup right away, but he’ll reclaim his starting job at second base if you need him. As for what else to expect, Scott White (CBS Sports) gives you a rundown of who to start and sit across all the different hitting positions. For the full positional breakdown as well as sleeper hitters for week 13, visit CBS Sports.

Outfield:

Too Obvious: Mike Trout, Andrew McCutchen, Jose Bautista, Giancarlo Stanton, Yasiel Puig, Carlos Gomez, Adam Jones, Ryan Braun, Jacoby Ellsbury, Brandon Moss, Matt Holliday, Hunter Pence, Nelson Cruz, Shin-Soo Choo, Alex Rios, Melky Cabrera, Yoenis Cespedes, Jayson Werth, Jason Heyward, Josh Hamilton, Alex Gordon, Allen Craig, Michael Morse, Charlie Blackmon, Khris Davis, Jay Bruce, Martin Prado, Matt Kemp, George Springer, Ryan Zimmerman, Gregory Polanco, Billy Hamilton, Starling Marte

Start: Marlon Byrd, Phillies

A fairly consistent source of power, Byrd has been hitting in all forms over his last seven games (.345 BA). The Phillies play eight this week and all eight games will be at Citizens Bank Park where routine fly balls are more than just routine. Seven of his eleven home runs have been hit there. Start Byrd instead of Brett Gardner, Austin Jackson or Josh Willingham.

Sit: Dexter Fowler, Astros

Typically Fowler falls under the category of under-started and under-owned, but he’ll face Mike Minor, Julio Teheran, Max Scherzer, Drew Smyly and Justin Verlander this week. Fowler’s high walk rate can’t save him from this bunch in week 13. Sit Fowler instead of Marlon Byrd, Corey Dickerson or Marcell Ozuna.

SI: WEEKLY PLANNER: COREY DICKERSON PICKS UP SLACK FOR ROCKIES’ OFFENSE

Opportunity is all Corey Dickerson needed when the Rockies lost Carlos Gonzalez and Michael Cuddyer. At this stage, Dickerson is an everyday starter for the Rockies and with the way he’s hitting, he’ll find himself in the lineup for the foreseeable future. Who else has been pinging fantasy owner’s radars, Michael Beller (Sports Illustrated) gives us the latest roster trends as well as favorable/unfavorable matchups for week 13. For the rest of Beller’s article covering the most added/dropped players, rankings and schedules for the week, visit Sports Illustrated.

Roster Trends:

Most Added:

  • Corey Dickerson, Rockies – Though he’s not widely owned, Dickerson is the most added player in fantasy leagues in the last three days. Hitting .354/.410/.667 should be enough explanation.
  • Steve Pearce, Orioles – A .424 batting average with two home runs in his last 10 games makes him worthy of consideration considering his safe spot in the lineup.

Most Dropped:

  • Jon Singleton, Astros – His lack of experience and going 0-for-10 in his last three games has led to owners dropping him, but his power still makes him an asset.
  • Jason Grilli, Pirates – Grilli has lost his job as the closer after a rough week. This may be a temporary move though so given the space, keep him on your roster.

ROTOWORLD: WEEK AHEAD: LEANING HEANEY

Andrew Heaney was viewed as a top 30 prospect and his presence has been a big shakeup to the Miami rotation after excelling in his first start against the Mets. He’ll get two cracks at proving his worth in week 13 as he’ll face Philadelphia and Oakland. While he’s not a “Strong Play” this week, he’s got plenty of upside and he’s available in over 50% of Yahoo! leagues. For all of Nick Nelson’s (Rotoworld) two-start recommendations as well as streaming options, check out his week ahead article over at Rotoworld. As for a sneak preview, we’ve listed his breakdown of total games played in week 13 for all AL and NL teams.
