As it’s getting late in the NFL season, fantasy owners trying to make a playoff push are really starting to feel the crunch as injuries are beginning to pile up. Here’s a look at this week’s important injuries and potential players who could step up, should the normal starter be unable to suit up.

Quarterback

Philip Rivers (P) has practiced in full this week. Like many quarterbacks in the NFL, he’s taken his fare amount of hits and although there’s been talk of his chest and ribs being banged up, he hasn’t missed a snap in practice. Rivers should be good to go on Sunday against the Rams.

Tony Romo (P) practiced in full on Thursday. Wednesday practices have become rest days for Romo’s broken back. A matchup against the division rival New York Giants should amp up Romo where he’s a full go on Sunday.

Ryan Tannehill (P) was limited in Wednesday’s practice with a shoulder injury. He was able to play through the injury last week and should be fine to play in Sunday against the Denver Broncos.

Running Back

Arian Foster (Q) is still trying to overcome the groin injury he sustained in Week 9 against Philadelphia. Although Coach Bill O’Brien called Foster a game time decision again this week, he looks doubtful to play. ESPN Texans reporter Tania Ganguli called Foster’s chances to play Week 12 against the Bengals “very, very low”. Alfred Blue remains a strong option for owners if Foster can’t play this week.

Joique Bell (P) and Reggie Bush (Q) are both dealing with nagging ankle injuries. Bell was held out of practice on Wednesday due to an ankle issue, but was able to suit up and practice fully on Thursday. This shouldn’t be a concern heading into his matchup Sunday against New England. Bush is still dealing with his own ankle issue which has been going on for a few weeks now. He did return to practice in a limited fashion on Thursday. This will be Bell’s backfield on Sunday and Bush is likely to see limited action with Theo Riddick taking some additional work.

Giovani Bernard (P) is back practicing fully this week.  Jeremy Hill’s time as a workhorse at an end. Both should still be useful in a timeshare, but the roles are still unclear. It may be possible that Hill will play on early downs and Bernard in a third down and pass catching role, although the situation will most likely cap their weekly upside. The Cincinnati backfield situation should be a little easier to predict after the game Sunday.

Pierre Thomas (Q) was limited in practice Thursday and Friday for the Saints. He had been out with a shoulder injury since injuring it during Week 7. His return would cut very slightly into the large workloads that Mark Ingram has been seeing lately. Ingram would remain the starting back with Thomas likely seeing a few opportunities on passing downs. Khiry Robinson (O) is still not practicing and is not likely to return just yet.

Lamar Miller (Q) practiced fully Wednesday, but must have hurt his knee that day as he popped up on the injury report afterwards and only practiced on a limited basis on Thursday and Friday. It is encouraging that he was still able to practice, but owners will want to have a backup plan in place as Miami plays at 4:25 ET. Damien Williams and Daniel Thomas would carry the load if Miller can’t play, but neither are very exciting fantasy options.

Owners know by now that Ahmad Bradshaw (IR) is out for the year with a broken leg. The Colts placed him on injured reserve leaving Trent Richardson and Dan Herron as the next running backs in line to play. Richardson could be in for a busy day as the Colts are playing Jacksonville in a game that could be out of hand by the second quarter, leaving a lot of volume for the run game if the Colts go into clock killing mode. Herron’s role is unclear, but he is worth a speculative add as Richardson has struggled as a runner this year.

Emmanuel Sanders (P) missed practice Wednesday and Thursday, but returned on Friday. It appears he has passed the concussion protocol and should be able to play Sunday. If he suffers a setback and doesn’t play, rookie Cody Latimer makes for an interesting deep sleeper this week.

Arizona wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald (Q) has not practiced all week as he sprained his MCL last week against Detroit. He was able to finish the game, but his status is in question for this week. Michael Floyd, John Brown and Jaron Brown would all see an uptick in targets if Fitzgerald doesn’t play, but all three would be a dice roll in the spread the wealth Arizona passing game.

Chicago wide receivers Brandon Marshall (P) and Alshon Jeffery (P) are both dealing with injuries, but returned to limited practice on Thursday. Marshall sprained his ankle two weeks ago, but played last week and went off for 7-90-2 against the Vikings. Jeffery sat with a hamstring injury on Wednesday, but his return Thursday looks promising. Both are expected to play on Sunday. If either were to miss the game, rookie Marquess Wilson could be a very deep sleeper this week for extremely brave owners.

Tight End

Julius Thomas (Q) missed practice Wednesday and Thursday and was very limited on Friday with an ankle injury he sustained last Sunday against the Rams. His Monday MRI didn’t show any major issues which is encouraging. He may be shaping up as a game time decision. If Thomas doesn’t play, Jacob Tamme is a low end handcuff option at best. It is likely owners can find a better option on waivers.

Delanie Walker (P) has been out with a concussion, but returned to practice and is probable to play this weekend against the Eagles. His production has tailed off since a hot start to the season and how he meshes with Zach Mettenberger remains to be seen.

Jordan Reed (O) continues to have trouble with his hamstrings. After injuring his left hamstring in the first game of the year, he now has a right hamstring strain. Niles Paul could be a solid play for tight end needy owners. Earlier in the season, Paul had some big games during Reed’s absence.

Dwayne Allen (O) has not practiced yet this week and was declared out on Friday. Coby Fleener had a huge game against the Patriots last week after Allen went down and could be in line to do so again without Allen against the Jaguars.
