Fantasy Football: 6 Under-the-Radar Moves

Owen Daniels' move should give him a significant fantasy bump in value

Owen Daniels’ move to Denver should give him a significant fantasy bump in value

We’ve heard about all the major splashes in the NFL and some of them were indeed MAJOR. Considering every sports outlet discussed all angles of the moves involving the likes of the DeMarco Murray’s and LeSean McCoy’s of the NFL, it’s easy to miss what many would consider under the radar.

However small some transactions may have seemed, they don’t always hold the same small value when it comes to fantasy impact. Taking a closer look at the offseason, we have asked the experts for their under-the-radar moves that will have a noteworthy fantasy impact. Read on for the pundits’ thoughts.

Q. What under-the-radar move this offseason will have a noteworthy fantasy impact?

Owen Daniels to Broncos
“It may not be “under the radar”, since undoubtedly there are others who share this opinion, but Owen Daniels should be a terrific value play at tight end now that he’s going to be aligned with Peyton Manning. Daniels has never had more than six TD catches in any of his nine professional seasons, but I’d nevertheless set the over/under at 6.5 TD catches for Daniels next season, and I think he could approach double digits if he stays healthy.”
Pat Fitzmaurice (The Football Girl)

“Owen Daniels fits this bill for me. If Peyton is healthy again, Daniels could have a significant red-zone impact. Looks like a top-10 fantasy tight end, right?”
John Halpin (Fox Sports)

Josh Hill becomes TE1 in NO
“Lost in the shuffle is the fantasy value of New Orleans new TE1, Josh Hill. No one will confuse Hill for Graham, but Hill is quite the athlete in his own right, and has thrived in limited duty in the past. His ability to block makes him a 3-down player and his increase in snaps and targets should put him firmly in TE1 territory in 2015. The biggest buzz was the trade involving Jimmy Graham but, the greater impact was on Hill.”
Ryan Noonan (The Fantasy Fix)

Kenny Stills lands in Miami
“I wrote about Mr. Stills after his rookie season. The signing of Brandin Cooks in NO and an early season injury complicated things for the sophomore breakout I had expected from Stills – but make no mistake, the talent exists and he’s running…err…catching angrier now that New Orleans sent him packing. A human highlight reel, Stills has the ability to blow the top off defenses with his record-breaking YAC ability. The dude’s a natural talent and will slide right into an immediate WR2 impact player in MIA with Wallace and Hartline gone. More notably, he fits well into Tannehill’s skill set, and will provide value as an additional safety valve for the QB in their offense. Pat yourself on the back if you have him in dynasty, and draft excitedly in redraft.”
Nathan Miller (Revelation Sports)

Shane Vereen joins Giants
“Effective yet underutilized in New England, Vereen joins a Giants squad with Rashad Jennings and Andre Williams already splitting carries in the backfield. But the former Patriots’ skill set is very different than the two RBs already on the squad. For years, the Giants have struggled with screens to backs and feel Vereen is the solution to that issue. New York didn’t have to break the bank to get Vereen, signing him to a $12 million deal over a three year span with $5 million guaranteed. He’ll be a solid flex play in full point PPR leagues and could emerge as a RB2 if Jennings can’t stay healthy.”

Virgil Green re-signs with Denver
“Backup tight end Virgil Green re-signing with Denver seems like a fairly innocuous move, but coupled with Julius Thomas leaving and pro-TE coach Gary Kubiak taking over—Green’s fantasy football prospects get a lot more interesting. Yes, Owen Daniels followed Coach Kubiak to Denver, but keep in mind three-things: (1) Daniels will be 33 years old at the end of 2015, and carries with him a troublesome injury history. (2) This NFL Draft does not appear to possess a star tight end option for Denver to add. (3) Coming out of Nevada in 2011, Green was one of the most athletic TE prospects in the past decade: a 4.6+ runner with excellent agility, and a stellar 42.5” vertical. Denver has even used him as a RB to carry the ball in the past. The door is open as much as it has ever been for Green, and if he gets a shot—it could be very interesting to see what he can do in fantasy football in 2015 with Peyton Manning.”
R.C. Fischer (Fantasy Football Metrics)

Jarvis Landry fills void left by Wallace and Hartline
“Right now it seems as if everyone is drooling all over Saints 3rd Year TE Josh Hill as Jimmy Graham’s recent departure enabled him to become the “hot buzz” around the fantasy world. One guy we think has bigger potential heading into the 2015 fantasy season is the new Dolphins WR1, Jarvis Landry. Miami’s biggest headache (Mike Wallace) is now gone, which leaves Landry the easy WR1. In his first season in the NFL, the rookie caught 85 balls for 758 yards and 5 TDs on 112 targets (Wallace saw 115 targets). With WR Kenny Stills and TE Jordan Cameron new to the Miami mix, expect the Landry/Tannehill chemistry to play a major factor in production this 2015 season. Landry looks to be a for-sure lock at 90-100 receptions as he aims to mock the gameplay of the former great, Hines Ward.”
