Fantasy Baseball Daily Update: 4/24/15

Yordano Ventura and the Royals were once again involved in an altercation

Yordano Ventura and the Royals were once again involved in an altercation

The Kansas City Royals were again involved in an altercation between teams. Yordano Ventura fielded a groundball by Adam Eaton and threw Eaton out as first. The two barked at each other, and a team-wide brawl that saw five players ejected ensued. As we know by now, this is not the first time this week that Ventura has been part of a melee. He allowed a three-run home run to Josh Reddick of the Athletics, and proceeded to hit Brett Lawrie later in the game. Whatever the case, the Royals keep winning, and their victory will be a part of the daily update for April 24, 2015.

Recap

Eric Hosmer’s 13th-inning double leads Royals
Although there were fireworks with the brawl in the seventh, the Royals rallied to win in the 13th inning, as Hosmer’s double knocked in Jarrod Dyson for a 3-2 victory. Hosmer has had a great start to the 2015 season, a .919 OPS, and may be able to fulfill previous lofty expectations this season. He only had a .716 OPS last season, but a .983 OPS in the postseason, and could become a top-15 1B for the 2015 campaign. His speed from 2011-2013 may return as well. He already has two steals after a four-steal 2014 season.

Giancarlo Stanton hits another home run
Stanton had a somewhat sluggish start to the 2015 season, but has a home run in two of three games and four of his past seven. He hit a two-run home run in the 6th inning of the Marlins’ 9-1 win over the Phillies on Thursday, and now has 14 RBI for the season. Stanton hit 37 home runs with a .395 OBP last season, even after missing from September 11th on. Stanton has five multi-hit games this season, but he has also tallied 22 strikeouts.

Mets led by Bartolo Colon to 11th-straight win
Colon pitched six innings, allowed seven hits, three runs, and no walks for his fourth win of the season. Colon has a 0.88 WHIP in 26 innings, allowing only one walk. When combined with a .224 batting average against, Colon is a decent SP3. Colon’s skill set is well known, a lot of fastballs near the plate, and he has truly mastered it so far this season. Daniel Murphy added four RBI to fuel the 6-3 victory for the Mets. He had a bases-loaded, three-run double in the first and a RBI single in the seventh.

Michael Wacha outduels Max Scherzer as Cardinals beat Nationals
Wacha has a 1.33 ERA through his first 20 1/3 innings and outdueled Nationals ace Scherzer yesterday in Washington. Wacha has not performed as well with strikeouts this season, he only has 12, but he has only walked four batters and has a 1.48 GB/FB ratio. He has also pitched seven innings in each of his last two appearances, as he logged seven against the Nationals yesterday, allowing one run, five hits, two walks, and striking out a season-high six. Scherzer was solid in his seven frames, extending his streak of 15 2/3 innings without a walk, but allowed two runs and only struck out four batters. Wacha could be a fringe SP2 by the end of the season, and is an intriguing player in dynasty formats. Scherzer is an SP1 and is a top-five pitcher.

Nick Tropeano stars for Angels against Athletics
Tropeano pitched six shutout innings, allowing five hits and one walk to silence the Athletics. Tropeano was acquired for Hank Conger in the offseason, and could be a big player for the Angels in the future. Garrett Richards is returning from an injury, Matt Shoemaker has struggled to begin the season, and the Angels need a solid player for the back-end of the rotation. Tropeano began his career in the Astros’ organization, and has a 3.28 ERA and 9.2 strikeouts per nine over his minor league career.

What to watch for

Jacob DeGrom and Michael Pineda will face off as the Mets take on the Yankees in the Subway Series. The Mets have won 11-straight games, and the Yankees have won six of seven. Pineda has looked sharp this season with a 20 to 2 K:BB ratio, and deGrom has a phenomenal 0.93 ERA. Outside of the Subway Series, Shane Greene looks to extend his outstanding start to the 2015 as he and the Tigers take on the Indians.
