Troy Tulowitzki and the Rockies have seven games at home this week

Week three is here, and now we can start to see what our fantasy teams look like. Here are some players to target for your lineups in seasonal and daily leagues.

Catcher

  • Best Bet: Salvador Perez – Kansas City Royals
Perez is off to a very good start in 2015. He’s batting .357 with three home runs and 11 RBI. For a pure catcher he does play a ton of games, generally only resting one day a week. In 2014 he played 150 games. The Royals play a seven-game schedule in week three ,so he should suit up for five or six games.
  • Safe Play: Derek Norris – San Diego Padres
Norris is batting .262 through his first 11 games of 2015 which isn’t spectacular. But Norris and the Padres have a trip to Colorado for four games which can cure any batter ills. After four games there they face the Dodgers for three and they will likely miss Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke.
  • Sleeper: Caleb Joseph – Baltimore Orioles
While the Orioles and many fantasy owners wait for Matt Wieters to recover from his elbow surgery, the guy filling in for him is doing just fine. Joseph is batting .367 in nine games played with an OPS of 1.057. While this may not turn into a Wally Pipp situation, Joseph is a good target while Wieters is out if you need a fill-in catcher for a couple weeks.

First Base

  • Best Bet: Miguel Cabrera – Detroit Tigers
I know picking Cabrera seems kind of obvious, but the start that he is off to is too hard to ignore. Through his first 11 games Cabrera is batting .442 with two home runs and 10 RBI. The Tigers also get to welcome in the Yankees’ pitching staff for four games followed by the Indians’ rotation for three that Cabrera already terrorized in week one.
  • Safe Play: Anthony Rizzo – Chicago Cubs
Besides the people who drafted Kris Bryant for their fantasy teams, Rizzo has to be the happiest person to see him called up during week two. Having Bryant hitting fourth behind Rizzo will give the Cubs’ first baseman some protection in the lineup he never really enjoyed last season. Rizzo is off to a nice start in 2015, batting .281 in his first 10 games.
  • Sleeper: Justin Morneau – Colorado Rockies
Anyone who follows the Rockies knows how they can be different hitters when they are away from Coors Field. After spending only three games at Coors during the first two weeks, the Rockies get to come home for seven games in week three. Morneau batted 20 points higher at Coors in 2014, and has his only home run at home this season.

Second Base

  • Best Bet: Ian Kinsler – Detroit Tigers
Kinsler arguably has the best hitting spot in all of baseball, batting second in front of Miguel Cabrera. So far in 2015 he’s off to a solid start batting .289 in his first 11 games. Kinsler and the Tigers get some home cooking in week three with four games against the Yankees and three against Cleveland.
  • Safe Play: Dustin Pedroia – Boston Red Sox
Pedroia seems fresh and ready for a solid 2015, batting .255 with three home runs already in 11 games. The Red Sox will be playing seven games in week three against familiar foes Baltimore and Tampa Bay. The Red Sox have had no issues scoring runs this season, and should continue to do so this week with Pedroia being involved in the action.
  • Sleeper: Brandon Phillips – Cincinnati Reds
When a second baseman is batting fourth it’s hard to not include him in a column like this. Phillips is batting .286 through his first 11 games with only three runs batted in and zero home runs. Cincinnati does get to face a Brewers’ pitching staff for four games who is struggling to beat anybody. This could be the week Phillips busts out and becomes the run producer the Reds are looking for.

Shortstop

  • Best Bet: Troy Tulowitzki – Colorado Rockies
Tulowitzki might be the best play in all of fantasy baseball this week. He’s batting .349 with a slugging percentage of .581 in his first 11 games. The scary part is those numbers, with the exception of three games, were all on the road. The Rockies get to come home for seven in week three, and should be able to score plenty of runs.
  • Safe Play: Hanley Ramirez – Boston Red Sox
This might be a bit of a technicality, but should Ramirez not qualify as a shortstop in your league he’s still worthy of being played in your outfield or utility spot. Ramirez really seems to enjoy his return to the Red Sox, as he already has three home runs to start the year. Ramirez and the Red Sox will be facing the Orioles and Rays this week, and it sure seems like anytime these AL East foes meet, plenty of runs are scored.
  • Sleeper: Jean Segura – Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers are off to a miserable start in 2015, but Segura is one of their few bright spots. He’s batting .350 in his first 11 games. With the injury to Carlos Gomez, Segura has been batting first or second in the Brewers’ lineup which only enhances his fantasy value. The Brewers will be playing seven games in week three, all at home against the Reds and Cardinals.

Third Base

  • Best Bet: Nolan Arenado – Colorado Rockies
Arenado is having a great start to 2015. His batting average is .317, but his slugging percentage is an impressive .693 through his first 11 games. As you can already tell I’m a big fan of playing Rockies this week with seven games at home. In 2014 Arenado hit 16 home runs at home compared to just two on the road.
  • Safe Play: Todd Frazier – Cincinnati Reds
Frazier is struggling to hit for average in the early parts of 2015 but he does have three home runs after blasting 29 last season. The Reds have a favorable schedule in week three playing four games against the Brewers and three against the Cubs.
  • Sleeper: Brett Lawrie – Oakland A’s
No matter who the A’s seem to acquire they still manage to score runs. Lawrie is batting a solid .267 in 12 games this season. Oakland will be playing seven games in week three with four against the Angles and Houston at home for three.

Outfield

  • Best Bet: Andrew McCutchen – Pittsburgh Pirates
McCutchen is off to a slow start in 2015, batting only .206 through his first 10 games. He’s too talented to be held down for long. Week three is lined up nicely for McCutchen and the Pirates, as they face the Cubs at home without seeing Jon Lester and Arizona away in a park that is friendly to right-handed hitters like McCutchen.
  • Safe Play: Adam Jones – Baltimore Orioles
Jones might be one of the safest plays in all of fantasy baseball. He’s off to a solid start in 2015 batting .415 through 11 games. He plays in a park and for team that scores plenty of runs, and Baltimore plays seven games in week three. Facing off against suspect pitching staffs such as the Blue Jays and the Red Sox, Jones and the rest of the Orioles will be looking for a big offensive week.
  • Sleeper: Lorenzo Cain – Kansas City Royals
Cain and the Royals are doing their best to prove that 2014 was no fluke. Cain is off to a hot start in 2015, batting .419 in 11 games with an OPS of 1.141. Batting third in the lineup provides Cain with an opportunity to drive in plenty of runs. He already has 11 RBI this season.

Starting Pitchers

  • Best Bet: Lance Lynn – St. Louis Cardinals
Lynn has a 1-1 record with a 1.64 ERA in his first two starts with 13 strikeouts. He’ll be making two starts in week three, his first against the Nationals and later in the week versus the Brewers. Neither team has been lighting up the scoreboard in 2015.
  • Safe Play: Jake Arrieta – Chicago Cubs
Arrieta is 1-1 this season with an ERA of 1.98 to go along with 12 strikeouts. He will be making two starts in week three, facing Pittsburgh and Cincinnati on the road.
  • Sleeper: Edinson Volquez – Kansas City Royals
The name makes many people cringe yet he’s off to a good start this season. Volquez is 1-1 with a 2.30 ERA in 2015 with a WHIP of 0.70. He’s playing for a good defensive team in the Royals who are off to a good start as well and with their bullpen shutting things down. Volquez has an opportunity to get a couple wins in week three. He will be facing the Twins at home followed by the White Sox later in the week.

Closers

  • Best Bet: Aroldis Chapman – Cincinnati Reds
Chapman may be the best closer in the game right now. His consistency for accumulating strikeouts is what separates him from others. In 2015 he already has three saves with nine strikeouts, and the Reds have seven games in week three.
  • Safe Play: Joakim Soria – Detroit Tigers
The veteran reliever seized the closer role for the Tigers when incumbent Joe Nathan went on the disabled list. Soria has four saves already, and the Tigers are at home all week against the Yankees and Indians. There should be several opportunities for saves this week for Soria.
  • Sleeper: Adam Ottavino – Colorado Rockies
It’s difficult to pick any Colorado pitcher for any sort of list, but Ottavino has pitched so well he can’t be ignored. So far in 6.1 innings he’s allowed just one hit, while picking up two strikeouts and two saves. The Rockies will be home for week three, so if you’re looking for a closer Ottavino may be your guy if he hasn’t already been snatched up in your league.
