Bold Predictions: Addison Russell, Blake Swihart, and More

Now is the time to scoop Addison Russell from your waiver wire.

Now is the time to scoop Addison Russell from your waiver wire.

The following is a list of five players and corresponding bold predictions in terms of how well they’ll wind up playing over the course of the season (player stats and fantasy league ownership listings from Yahoo will be from up to and including games from 5/2/15). These players will likely surpass most fantasy league owners’ expectations (I will not include players owned in at least 70% of all Yahoo fantasy leagues).

Get Start/Sit & Waiver Wire Advice

2B/SS – Addison Russell – CHC (owned: 53%)

The rookie’s time has come and while he hasn’t gotten off to the greatest of starts offensively (currently batting .206 in 34 AB) and is being batted at the bottom of the order for the Cubs lineup, it should only be a matter of time before the young phenom starts to really produce at the plate. Russell has a career .301 BA in the minor leagues, has plenty of pop for a middle infielder and has base stealing ability. Now is the time to acquire him if you have any glaring holes in your middle infield on your fantasy team(s). He has both 2B and SS eligiblity, which definitely ups his fantasy value.

My Prediction – AB: 480, R: 82, BA: .278, HR: 18; RBI: 72; SB: 21

– Blake Swihart – BOS (owned: 20%)

With starting catcher Ryan Hanigan on the 60-day DL with a fractured hand, the Red Sox made the obvious move of calling up rookie catching prospect Blake Swihart, who didn’t disappoint in his major league debut. On May 2nd, he went 1-for-3 with 1 run scored for the Red Sox. He hit an impressive .338 for AAA Pawtucket Red Sox in the early going of this season and his career minor league batting average shows that his hot start may not have been a fluke (career .287 hitters in the minors and batted .293 altogether in-between his stints in AA and AAA in 2014). He can easily be had and is an ideal pick up for all fantasy teams in need of a replacement catcher.

My Prediction – AB: 440, R: 70, BA: .275, HR: 15; RBI: 70

OF Denard Span – WAS (owned: 53%)

Although Denard Span‘s abdomen (following a March surgery) was starting to affect him again in Washinton’s past 2-3 games, he recently returned to the Nationals starting lineup on Sunday (May 3rd). He seems to be OK now, but the fact that his abdomen was acting up on him again is a little bit worrisome. Nevertheless, it was a good sign that Span was back to hitting the way he did in the 2014 season (where he hit .302 with 94 R and 31 SB) once he returned to action in late April after missing some time early this season, and it was an even better sign that he returned from abdomen soreness relatively quickly (he only sat out for two games and had no issues in his most recent game). If he continues to start in his next couple of games without any issues related to his abdomen, you would be well advised to pick him up immediately.

My Prediction – AB: 545, R: 88, BA: .298, HR: 4, RBI: 48; SB: 26

OF – Alex Rios – KC (owned: 66%)

The 34-year-old veteran Alex Rios was off to a solid start this season before suffering a fracture in his left hand in mid-April . He should be back in late May, but now would be the time to pick him up while his yahoo leagues ownership percentage in still fairly low. He was hitting .321 with 1 HR, 8 RBI, 4 R and 2 SB so far this season (similar to the type of numbers he was putting up in 2015 spring training) before being put on the DL and was looking more like the player he was in 2012 (when he hit .304 with 25 HR, 91 RBI, 93 R and 23 SB) than the player he has been in the previous two seasons. Snatch him up right now and be rewarded for your patience in the long run.

My Prediction – AB: 454, R: 78, BA: .285, HR: 22, RBI: 79; SB: 24

OF Josh Hamilton – TEX (owned: 31%)

While his stint with the Angels has turned into a forgettable one, it’s now up to Josh Hamilton to get himself to stay drug-free, healthy and straightened out at the plate. If he can do that, it will help bring order to a struggling Rangers team. The soon to be 34-year-old Hamilton is unlikely to put up monster numbers in batting average, home runs and runs batting in, but it wouldn’t be a crazy idea to pick him up in your league if he’s still available and stash him away on your DL for now. He should be starting in the Rangers outfield by late May.

My Prediction – AB: 445, R: 75, BA: .280, HR 28; RBI 85
