DFS Stock Watch: Jake Marisnick, Gerrit Cole, Corey Kluber

Jake Marisnick and the Astros continued their hot start this week

Jake Marisnick and the Astros continued their hot start this week

Many well-respected MLB Analysts (including Tom Verducci and Harold Reynolds) have been raving about how well the Houston Astros rebuilt the organization’s farm system over the past few years, with young and promising talent. Unfortunately for the Astros, that hasn’t translated into wins, as they have finished at or near the bottom of the standings for the past five years. Perhaps that is finally changing this year. It’s only May 2, but the Astros are tied with Kansas City, last year’s AL pennant winners, for the best record in the AL (16-7). I know it’s very early and there is still a ton of baseball left to be played, but for a team and a fan base that has been the doormat of the sport for so long, it has to be a fun ride.

No wonder then that our stock up…stock down series this week includes two of Houston’s promising young stars.

Each week this column will take a look at the risers and fallers in DFS play from the past week. This list is for players who currently find themselves on either a  hot or cold streak and have seen their value increase or decrease accordingly.

Stock Up

Outfield: Jake Marisnick – OF – HOU
Marisnick’s play of late has been instrumental in helping the team win eight in-a-row and nine of its last 10 games. Since coming over from the Miami Marlins in a 2014 mid-season trade, the 24-year-old has not disappointed. Over the past seven games, Marisnick is hitting .450/.500/.950 (9-for-20), with two HR, five RBI, seven R and even five SB. He’s averaging 5.3 FPPG since Monday, and has had his salary increase by $700 to $3200 over the past seven days.

Other Notables

Infield: Jose Altuve – 2B – HOU
The 2014 AL Batting Champion is starting to heat up. Over the past seven games, Altuve hit .515/.514/.758 (17-for-33) and had two 2B, eight RBI, nine R and four SB. The 24-year-old second baseman is currently on a 10-game hitting streak, dating back to April 21, and has had at least two hits in every game since April 22. Since Monday, Altuve has averaged 6.3 FPPG, and has seen his salary increase by $900 to $4700 over the past week.

Other Notables

Starting Pitcher: Gerrit Cole – SP – PIT
Cole has gotten himself into the upper-echelon of starting pitchers in DFS. Based on his last start, he’s seen his salary increase by $900 to $9200. Cole earned the win against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, going six IP, while SO eight. He scored 18 FP. On the season Cole is 4-0 with a 1.76 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 10.43 K/9. Opponents are hitting just .198 against him.

Other Notables

Stock Down

Infield: Ian Kinsler – 2B –  DET
Kinsler has seen his salary drop by $400 to $3600. Over the past seven days he’s hit .259/.375/.333 (7-for-27). He has yet to hit a HR this season and only has 10 RBI. He collected two of them this week. At $3600, you’d like to see more power numbers put up, before slotting him into your lineup. You’re better off looking for more value at 2B and spending the money you’re saving at other positions (1B; 3B; OF).

Other Notables

Outfield: Corey Dickerson – OF – COL
Dickerson is averaging just 1.43 FPPG over his last four games and has seen his salary decrease by $400 to $4400. Over his last seven games, he’s hit .250/.286/.300 (5-for-20), with zero HR, just one RBI and six SO. He’ll need to generate way more power like he did earlier in the season, before being able to justify such a high price tag in DFS play.

Other Notables

Starting Pitcher: Corey Kluber – SP – CLE
What’s wrong with Kluber? He scored 7.33 in his last start on Monday against the Kansas City Royals. Although he’s averaging more than a SO/IP (9.529 K/9), he has an ERA of 4.24 and opponents are hitting 2.77 against him. This is a far cry from last season when he won the AL Cy Young. He’ll need to turn things around before being counted on in DFS play.
