Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers: Week 13

Steven Matz is poised to have a good debut

Steven Matz is poised to have a good debut

Each week this column will scour the waiver wire and look for pitchers who are less than 50% owned that could be useful streamers for your fantasy team. All ownership percentages come from Yahoo. Please note the probable pitcher matchups could change throughout the week due to rainouts or other circumstances, so be sure to check back before picking up and starting one of these recommendations.

Sunday 6/28

Steven Matz – New York Mets (37% owned)
vs. Cincinnati Reds

The Mets just recalled the prized rookie, and he will be making his big league debut on Sunday against the Reds. The young left-hander will take on an offense that is striking out at a 21.1% rate against left-handed pitching.

Monday 6/29

Jimmy Nelson – Milwaukee Brewers (12% owned)
@ Philadelphia Phillies

Nelson has had some struggles this season, but he will be facing off against a Philadelphia offense that is last or close to last in the league in most offensive categories. On the season, the Phillies have a .241 batting average and just a .358 slugging percentage. Nelson does have some legitimate strikeout upside, as he is punching out over seven batters per nine innings.

Tuesday 6/30

Taylor Jungmann – Milwaukee Brewers (3% owned)
@ Philadelphia Phillies

The young rookie has made just four starts on the season, but he has been a solid starter for the Brewers. He has a 2.74 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 23 innings of work. As mentioned above, the Phillies are a team to target with opposing starting pitching whenever possible. Do note that Cole Hamels is scheduled to face Jungmann Tuesday night, so a win might not be in the cards for the rookie. Either way, he should be able to pitch deep into the game with very few runs allowed.

Wednesday 7/1

Roenis Elias, Seattle Mariners (9% owned)
@ San Diego Padres

The southpaw, Elias, will travel to pitcher-friendly Petco Park and take on a Padres’ offense that is striking out a ton against left-handed pitchers. The Padres have a 23.8% strikeout rate against lefties and have had trouble scoring runs consistently on the season. Elias has a 4-5 record, 4.25 ERA and 57 strikeouts this year.

Thursday 7/2

Cody Anderson – Cleveland Indians (3% owned)
@ Tampa Bay Rays

Anderson had a stellar major league debut, spinning seven and two-thirds innings of shutout baseball with four strikeouts against the Rays last week. He will face off against them again on Thursday and hope for similar results. The Rays offense is in the bottom third of the league in batting average and slugging percentage with a 21.1% strikeout rate against right-handed pitchers this season.

Friday 7/3

Tsuyoshi Wada, Chicago Cubs (5% owned)
vs. Miami Marlins

Wada had his last scheduled start skipped with a sore shoulder, but as of now the Cubs believe that he will take his next scheduled turn on Friday. The Marlins offense does hit against left-handers fairly well, but they still strike out over 20% of the time and Wada has 31 strikeouts in 31.1 innings of work. The strikeouts Wada rings up should be able to offset a few runs given up.

Saturday 7/4

Bud Norris – Baltimore Orioles (3% owned)
@ Chicago White Sox

The White Sox’s hitters have been almost as beneficial to target as the Phillies lately. Norris is by no means a great pitcher, but the matchup is right, and he has been pitching much better as of late than he was at the beginning of the season. Over his last six starts, he has allowed just 14 runs. This comes after allowing 23 runs in his first four starts. On the year, Chicago has a .246 batting average and a .366 slugging percentage against right-handed pitching and Norris is 2-6 with a 6.70 ERA and 35 strikeouts.
