At first glance, Clayton Kershaw pitching against the pathetic New York Mets offense tonight would seem like a no-brainer. The only thing holding me back is his $13,300 price tag. Tying up that much salary in one player would really impact the offensive weapons to choose from. Luckily there are other solid options to choose from tonight.
Offensively, look for a lot of runs in the Milwaukee-Arizona matchup.

Pitcher
- Lance McCullers HOU $6700
McCullers has been impressive this season. He has more than a SO/IP (71/64) and posts a 2.52 ERA coming into tonight. While the Astros have said they will limit his innings in the second half of the season, he could still be a sneaky pick tonight. The Boston Red Sox have struggled so far in the second half of the season. They are losers of seven in a row and are 2-8 over their last 10 games. Although Boston does not strike out a lot, they do struggle to score runs. They rank 11th in the AL with 385 runs scored. Look for McCullers to go between five and seven innings, with five strikeouts, and be in line for the win.
Other Notables
- Clayton Kershaw LAD $13,300
- Francisco Liriano PIT $10,000
- Tyson Ross SD $8,500
Catcher
- Evan Gattis HOU $3,300
Gattis has been very impressive this season. He has 16 HR and 56 RBI and is a big reason why the Astros are competing in the AL West. He faces Wade Miley and the Boston Red Sox tonight. Miley has struggled this season, with an ERA of 4.49.
Other Notables
- Jonathan Lucroy MIL $3,100
- Derek Norris SD $2,200
First Base
- Paul Goldschmidt ARI $4,700
Goldschmidt is on pace for a Triple Crown season. He is batting .400 (8-for-20) over his last seven games, with two doubles, two RBI and five walks. His numbers have been ridiculous all season and his splits are even more impressive. He is batting .332/.455/.579 with 15 HR and 53 RBI against RHP and faces Michael Fiers (3.79 ERA) tonight. Goldschmidt is also batting .352 at home this season. All good signs for a big game from him tonight.
Other Notables
- Adam Lind MIL $4,000
- Adrian Gonzalez LAD $3800
- Pedro Alvarez PIT $2500
Second Base
- Neil Walker PIT $3,000
Walker is having his best month of the season so far. He’s batting .316 with three doubles, three HR and 13 RBI in July. He and the Pirates face Doug Fister and the Washington Nationals tonight. Almost all of Walker’s power comes against RHP (seven HR and 34 RBI), a good thing if you decide to use him tonight.
Other Notables
- Jose Altuve HOU $4,500
- Jason Kipnis CLE $4,000
- Kolten Wong STL $3,100
- Danny Espinosa WAS $2,500
Third Base
- Mike Moustakas KC $2,500
It is amazing to me that Moustakas continue to be under-priced. He is batting .292 with three HR and eight RBI over his last seven games and is batting .296 with 10 HR and 39 RBI on the season. With the big two options at third base unavailable tonight (Josh Donaldson and Todd Frazier), Moustakas presents excellent value at the position.
Other Notables
- Matt Carpenter STL $2,900
- Luis Valbuena HOU $3,200
Shortstop
- Carlos Correa HOU $3,900
Since being called up from the minors Correa has been phenomenal for the Astros. He is batting .389 with two doubles, a HR and six RBI over his last seven games and .289 with 12 doubles, eight HR and 25 RBI on the season. He is a .327 hitter against LHP, compared to .268 against RHP, and has a favorable pitching matchup tonight against Miley and the Red Sox.
Other Notables
- Jhonny Peralta STL $3,400
- Francisco Lindor CLE $2,400
- Jung-Ho Kang $2,900
- Jean Segura MIL $2,800
Outfield
- Carlos Gomez MIL $4,500
- Gerardo Parra MIL $3,600
- Joc Pederson LAD $2,800
Gomez has good splits facing RHP. He is batting .282 against RHP versus .222 against LHP.
Parra has been on fire lately. He is batting .421 with two doubles, two triples and two RBI over his last seven games. This month he is batting .424 with four HR, 10 RBI, five doubles, two triples and six walks.
After belting 20 HR in the first half of the season, Pederson has yet to go yard in the second half. Tonight is as good a night as any, and his upside is hard to match at his current price.
Other Notables
- Ryan Braun MIL $4,500
- Justin Upton SD $2,800
- Matt Holliday STL $3,400
If you are going to go with Kershaw tonight, here is a suggested lineup:

- 2B: Danny Espinosa WAS $2,500
