For baseball fans this week is one of the most exciting of the season. With trade rumors swirling, fans are hopeful their teams make roster upgrades to help playoff pushes. Injuries certainly play a role in the need to upgrade rosters. Here are the key injuries to know about this week.

  • Brett Anderson (LAD SP) threw a bullpen session on Friday and appears on track to make his next start after leaving his last appearance with irritation in his left Achilles tendon. He is an interesting option in NL-only leagues, though I would avoid him this week.
  • Nori Aoki (SF OF) is scheduled for a follow-up evaluation and, if all goes well, he could make his return from a fractured right fibula. If you need a cheap source for stolen bases look to see if Aoki is available in your league.
  • Michael Cuddyer (NYM OF) was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of residual effects from a bone bruise in his left knee. At this point, he can be dropped in all formats.
  • David Freese (LAA 3B) was hit on his right hand during Wednesday’s contest, suffering a broken index finger. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list and will be out until mid-August, at the earliest. At that point he will have an X-ray to determine the next step in his rehab process. Remember that Freese broke his right middle finger last season, missing 16 games. His primary value is in AL-only leagues, so if you have the spot on your roster stash him for now.
  • Jaime Garcia (STL SP) will return from a groin strain on Tuesday, making the start against the Reds. When healthy, Garcia should be used in most formats. In just seven starts this year he has posted a 1.69 ERA and 0.88 WHIP.
  • Randal Grichuk (STL OF) left Sunday’s game early because of soreness in his groin and is day-to-day. If you have other outfield options in weekly leagues, play it safe and sit him this week. Grichuk has hit 11 home runs in just 68 games and is certainly worth starting in every format once this situation passes.
  • Brock Holt (BOS 2B) hyperextended his left knee during Sunday’s game, eventually leaving the game with tightness in that knee. Manager John Farrell stated, “We’ll check him tomorrow but he’s day to day. We don’t feel like this will be a time missed situation.”  Play it safe, however, and bench Holt this week.
  • Adam Lind (MIL 1B) left Saturday’s game with tightness in his lower back and he is considered day-to-day. His name has surfaced in trade rumors, with St. Louis as a possible destination. If he is dealt to the Cardinals his fantasy value will take a huge jump.
  • Jed Lowrie (HOU SS) has started his rehab assignment with the Astros’ Double-A affiliate, and his defensive work will be focused on transitioning him to third base, with Carlos Correa firmly entrenched at shortstop. With the Astros acquiring Scott Kazmir they are certainly looking at making a run this season and Lowrie is an intriguing option, especially in AL-only leagues.
  • Dustin Pedroia (BOS 2B) returned to the disabled list after re-injuring his right hamstring. While he is scheduled to have a platelet-rich plasma injection to help promote healing, expect the Red Sox to be especially cautious with him with the team falling out of the playoff race. Manager John Farrell explained, “I don’t know the exact time frame. We felt like a three-week shutdown period was going to suffice. I can’t say it’s going to be an additional three weeks. I don’t have that time frame right now.”  At this point, I don’t expect Pedroia to return until some point in September, at the earliest.
  • Wily Peralta (MIL SP) will make his return from a left oblique strain on Tuesday against the Giants. With San Francisco struggling offensively, Peralta is worth a gamble if you need a boost in your starting pitching.
  • Jean Segura (MIL SS) was scratched from Sunday’s game due to illness. Consider him day-to-day and expect him back soon.
  • Matt Wieters (BAL C) missed Sunday’s start with back stiffness but is expected to catch today. If you planned on him using him he should be safe to start this week.
