MLB Injury Report: Sonny Gray, George Springer, Giancarlo Stanton

Astros OF George Springer could be out for the remainder of the season

Astros OF George Springer could be out for the remainder of the season

It’s a holiday weekend and I am sure everyone is eager to get to his or her picnics or barbecues, so let’s jump right into the injury news.

Get Start/Sit & Waiver Wire Advice

  • Manny Banuelos (ATL SP) left his July 2 start early because of cramping and dehydration. I expect him to make his next scheduled start on Tuesday.
  • Carlos Beltran (NYY OF) was placed on the disabled list because of a strained left oblique muscle. He is not expected to return until some point after the All-Star Break. At this point in his career, Beltran is only worth using in AL-only leagues.
  • Patrick Corbin (AZ SP) could return to the Diamondbacks rotation as early as July 4 against the Colorado Rockies. I would add Corbin if you are in need of starting pitching, as he should be a cheap source for strikeouts. As with any pitcher returning from Tommy John surgery, though, don’t be surprised if he has control issues at first, which could negatively impact your team’s WHIP.
  • Michael Cuddyer (NYM OF) injured his left knee while running the bases during Tuesday’s game against the Cubs. An MRI did not reveal structural damage and he received a cortisone injection because of continued soreness. Since there has not been enough improvement for him to return to action a trip to the disabled list could occur by early next week.
  • Delino DeShields (TEX OF) could return to Texas’ lineup next week from a strained left hamstring. If you are in need of stolen bases, DeShields is worth a look.
  • Jacoby Ellsbury (NYY OF) had fatigue in his legs during his rehab assignment and he will not return to the Yankees until some point next week. Considering Ellsbury’s injury history and his history to only return when he is feeling fully healthy it would not surprise me if he doesn’t return until after the All-Star break.
  • Jaime Garcia (STL SP) missed Thursday’s scheduled start because of residual soreness from his left groin strain. Neither he nor the Cardinals think a stint on the disabled list is needed so expect him to make his scheduled start against the Cubs next week. Wait and see how Garcia fairs mechanics and velocity-wise before returning him to your starting lineup.
  • Jake Marisnick (HOU OF) began a rehab assignment this week and is scheduled to return from a strained left hamstring on July 6, barring any setbacks this weekend. If healthy, Marisnick should steal 10+ bases for the remainder of 2015 and should add at least five home runs.
  • Matt Moore (TB SP) struggled in his return from Tommy John surgery, lasting just 4 2/3 innings against Cleveland. Look for Moore to make gradual improvements with his command and go deeper into games from here on out. If you are looking to add a starting pitcher, especially in AL-only leagues, you have a small window to grab him.
  • Jake Odorizzi (TB SP) was solid in his first rehab start, though he lasted just 4 innings. I expect Tampa Bay to have him make one more rehab start before he returns from his oblique injury. Odorizzi was brilliant for the Rays earlier this season posting a 2.47 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP. With the offenses struggling in the AL East, Odorizzi should perform well for the remainder of the season and the opportunity to buy low is limited.
  • Jonathan Schoop (BAL 2B) could make his return from his sprained left knee later next week. If you are looking for some home runs in AL-only leagues, Schoop is an intriguing addition. However, he needs to get on base more consistently to be useful in mixed leagues.
  • Jorge Soler (CHC OF) should make return to Chicago’s lineup by early next week. He has been out since the early part of June because of a sprained left ankle. He won’t help your batting average but, if you need power, see if Soler is available in your league.
  • George Springer (HOU OF) was placed on the disabled list on July 2 because of a fractured right wrist. Springer was hit by an Edinson Volquez fastball during Wednesday night’s contest. Surgery is not indicated at this time and he will be out of baseball activities for six weeks, with re-evaluations occurring two weeks and six weeks from now. Depending on how his recovery progresses and the Astros’ place in the standings in late August, Springer could miss the remainder of the season.
  • Blake Swihart (BOS C) was placed on the disabled list because of his sprained left foot. He has not hit for average, nor shown any power, so he can be dropped in all formats.
