FantasyAces NFL Value Plays: Week 1
Jonathan Stewart should provide solid value at his price

Jonathan Stewart should provide solid value at his price

Whether constructing a cash game lineup or preparing for tournament play, you will need to be able to sort out the value options that are available each week. These plays can arise from a variety of reasons ranging from an injury to simple mispricing. Finding the diamonds in the rough can be the single difference between you and a high-scoring lineup.

Quarterbacks

Blake Bortles JAX $5,000
Bortles has a neutral matchup against Carolina in Week 1, but at this price he grades out as the top quarterback value in sheer dollars per point. This strategy is not without flaws, but we will save that debate for another day. Bortles is priced at rock bottom, but he projects better than five other quarterbacks and he serves as a fine second quarterback in tournament play.

Carson Palmer ARI $5,900
Palmer made the cut in my Week 1 lineup article, but I wanted to hammer home the point as he’s priced with the likes of a Joe Flacco, Jay Cutler and Nick Foles while having top 10 upside against the Saints.

Running Backs

Jonathan Stewart CAR $4,250
Like Carson Palmer, Stewart also made the lineup for my Week 1 article. Stewart projects out as the tenth highest scoring running back this week against the Jacksonville Jaguars but is priced as the 27th most expensive running back. Utilize the salary relief here to target other higher priced studs when constructing your lineups.

Frank Gore IND $4,100
While this is not exactly the best matchup for Gore, he has a favorable price tag and he figures to see plenty of red zone opportunities this season. Priced as the 31st most expensive back in a high powered offense while projecting to be inside the top 15 for Week 1, there is plenty of value here with Gore.

Ameer Abdullah DET $3,900
While the situation in Detroit’s backfield is less than ideal right now, Abdullah still figures to see plenty of work in the passing game as a change of pace back and at this price he’s worth targeting as a high upside tournament option. He will provide plenty of valuable salary relief and there is profit potential with this low salary.

Wide Receivers

Davante Adams GB $4,200
Adams will likely be a popular pick since he figures to step into a WR2 role for the Packers as Jordy Nelson was lost for the season. While there is actually some merit to fading Adams in tournaments as his ownership levels should be high, he still provides salary relief for roster construction. It is pretty simple here as he projects inside the top 20 of wide receivers in terms of production while being priced outside the top 30.

Allen Robinson JAX $4,000
Robinson is a viable lineup filler at this price, but I think he is a tremendous option to pair up with Bortles in tournament play. While this strategy increases risk, the correlation play can reap big rewards. Robinson is part of a talented receiver corps, which can make production tough to target sometimes, but that should help to drive his ownership levels down in tournaments. He’s a top 10 value in terms of $/point for Week 1 against the Panthers.

Nelson Agholor PHI $3,900
Agholor figures to see time on the outside and he has plenty of upside in an offense that figures to run plenty of plays on offense. While Jordan Matthews should occupy the slot and rack up catches, Agholor can provide the home run threat and propel your tournament team.

Devin Funchess CAR $3,850
This almost feels forced to recommend, but I would not arbitrarily throw Funchess into all of your lineups just because he is cheap and Kelvin Benjamin is out for the season. However, I do think there is some merit to utilizing him as a tournament filler as he still figures to see plenty of targets.

Jeff Janis GB $3,000
With the aforementioned injury to Jordy Nelson, it appears for now that Janis should step into the WR3 spot behind Randall Cobb and Davante Adams. While serving as a WR3 in the Green Bay offense is not the worst thing, Janis is raw and has been untested for the most part. With that being said, Green Bay appears confident for now in their receiving corps and the uncertainty surrounding Janis’ production makes him a prime tournament target as you should embrace some volatility in constructing those types of lineups.

Tight Ends

Ladarius Green SD $3,700
With Antonio Gates out for the first four games, the Chargers will need Green to step up and produce while flashing his speed. Green is priced just outside of the top 20 tight ends but comes in as the 11th best in projected points, which creates some value.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins TB $3,200
There are some hopes around Tampa for the second-year tight end as part of a talented group surrounding Jameis Winston. Seferian-Jenkins is a big-bodied tight end that has struggled some with drops this preseason, but he figures to see plenty of targets as opposing defenses attempt to limit Mike Evans. Tennessee does not project out as a good team defensively and with a rookie at quarterback, Seferian-Jenkins should prove as a reliable outlet for Winston and the Buccaneers.
