Can Matt Holliday be counted on for any significant fantasy production down the stretch after his latest injury?

While the trade deadline dominated baseball news during the last week, there have been plenty of injuries that fantasy owners need to be aware of. Luckily, in most fantasy leagues, you still have a few weeks to shore up your rosters heading into the stretch run. Here is the prognosis for the players you need to know about heading into next week.

  • Henderson Alvarez (MIA SP) had surgery on July 28 to repair a torn labrum. He will miss the remainder of the season and can be dropped in all formats.
  • Manny Banuelos (ATL SP) was placed on the disabled list, retroactive to July 25, because of inflammation in his left elbow. An MRI showed bone spurs on the posterior aspect of his elbow. Remember that Banuelos had Tommy John surgery in late 2012 and missed all of the 2013 season. Atlanta has him on a pitch limit for this season and, with the Braves falling out of the playoff race, I would not be surprised to see him shut down for the season.
  • Mookie Betts (BOS OF) was placed on the 7-day concussion DL on July 29. He injured himself on Tuesday when he tried to make a catch and fell over the bullpen wall in Fenway Park. Because each person has different concussion symptoms his return status is unknown at this time but expect the Red Sox to be especially conservative with their young star.
  • A.J. Burnett (PIT SP) was placed on the disabled list because of inflammation in his right elbow. Burnett has struggled in his three starts since the All-Star break, allowing 32 hits and 18 earned runs in just 16 innings. Pirates GM Neal Huntington explained, “We’ll see how it plays out over the next handful of days and how quickly the inflammation subsides and how he feels as he starts to get back to baseball activity.” At this point don’t count on Burnett until late August and a more accurate timetable for his return can be created when Pittsburgh updates Burnett’s condition.
  • Robinson Cano (SEA 2B) has been out of the lineup since Wednesday because of an abdominal strain. An MRI revealed a Grade 1 strain, which is the mildest form of muscle strain. Expect him to be out of action throughout the weekend and monitor his progress closely heading into Monday. Cano had a stellar July, batting .337 with seven home runs, so hopefully he is back to full strength next week.
  • Corey Dickerson (COL OF) dove to catch a line drive during Thursday’s game and the Rockies originally announced he suffered a rib contusion. An MRI late Friday revealed non-displaced fractures on two ribs on his right side. Perhaps it is good that Colorado traded for Jose Reyes, who can counsel Dickerson, since he missed a month because of a similar injury. I expect Dickerson to miss at least one month of action. With the Rockies looking ahead to 2016, and with Dickerson also battling plantar fasciitis, it would not surprise me if we don’t see Dickerson again this season.
  • Matt Holliday (STL OF) missed six weeks earlier this season after suffering a Grade 2 strain of his quadriceps muscle. He played in 11 games until he re-injured the same leg on Wednesday while trying to beat out a double play. An MRI revealed another Grade 2 strain though the team has indicated that this injury is not as severe as the previous one. “We’re still very hopeful that he’ll be able to contribute this year,” said Cardinals GM John Mozeliak. “A lot will be really determined over the next week or two. It’s my understanding that it’s not as deep as last time, which is encouraging, but you’ve still got to heal.” Remember that Holliday did not go on a minor-league rehab assignment went returning from his previous quadriceps injury. While I don’t think that contributed to this injury, it is important to note because a trip to the minors would have further delayed his return to major league action. While St. Louis is hopeful Holliday returns during the regular season, I am not optimistic he will contribute significant fantasy value for the remainder of 2015. If you don’t have a DL spot to stash him, you are justified in dropping Holliday.
  • Tim Hudson (SF SP) lost his spot in the Giants’ starting rotation after the team traded for Mike Leake and was placed on the disabled list. When asked about the injury, Hudson replied, “Let’s pick one.” Hudson has not been fantasy relevant in 2015, but I included him because he has been one of my fantasy baseball “man crushes” since his heyday with Oakland. It appears that Hudson might not throw another meaningful pitch in the majors. If that is the case, thanks for the great counting stats, Mr. Hudson. Enjoy retirement.
  • Clayton Kershaw (LAD SP) had his last start scratched twice this week because of soreness in his right hip/glute area. Remember that Kershaw had a similar issue back in 2012 where he missed just one start. The Dodgers continue to express optimism that he will pitch this weekend. On Friday, manager Don Mattingly stated, “It feels good. He’s not feeling anything. He’s going tomorrow.” With Zack Greinke and newly acquired Mat Latos, Los Angeles can afford to be a little cautious with Kershaw, as they need to keep him healthy for their push to the playoffs. Keep Kershaw active but monitor his progress throughout the weekend as you prepare to set your lineups for next week.
  • Michael Pineda (NYY SP) was scratched from his last start against the Rangers and was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right flexor muscle. He is expected to be out of action for at least one month.
  • C.C. Sabathia (NYY SP) went to a Texas hospital after his last start because of dehydration. When asked how he felt he responded with one word, “Tired.” Within the same piece, manager Joe Girardi elaborated, “We will see how he feels the next couple of days,’’ Girardi said. “You would think you would try to give him the weekend and get him completely healthy. We will have to figure it out and see how he feels.’’ It was hard to trust Sabathia in any format before this bout of heat illness though he will stay in New York’s rotation with Michael Pineda’s trip to the disabled list.
  • Pablo Sandoval (BOS 3B) had a rough week. During Wednesday’s game, Sandoval was thrown out at the plate while trying to score from first on a double to right-center field in Fenway Park, which is one of the deepest parts of the park. He was then removed from the game because of dehydration and manager John Farrell acknowledged there were concerns about Sandoval’s weight and conditioning. Sandoval was back in action on Thursday but was hit on his left forearm while swinging at a pitch. The resulting contusion forced him to miss Friday’s game. Consider him day-to-day.
  • Giancarlo Stanton (MIA OF) has been cleared to hit off a tee. When asked about Stanton’s return, manager Dan Jennings explained, “His hand looks good. It’s healed. The scar looks well. Now he’s going to start off the tee and into flips. He’ll progress at his timetable. It’s good to see him making strides the right way.” I still expect Stanton to miss at least two more weeks.
  • Stephen Strasburg (WAS SP) threw his first rehab start on Wednesday and could make his return from a left oblique strain later next week. “All reports are good, no issue with the injury,” Nationals manager Matt Williams explained. “We’ll look to another one to get him that fifth inning and up him to 85 (pitches) and go from there.” Strasburg has struggled throughout this season but was excellent in his three starts after he returned from a strained trapezius muscle. The window to buy low on Strasburg could close quickly once he returns to Washington’s rotation.
  • Devon Travis (TOR 2B) re-injured his left shoulder on Tuesday during one of his at-bats. He left that contest early, had a cortisone injection on Wednesday and then was placed on the disabled list retroactive to July 29. This is the second time he was placed on the DL because of the shoulder, with his last stint lasting six weeks. Hopefully, this is something that can be managed with the 15-day rest and rehab process. Stash him for now and hope that there are no reports of a setback.
  • Justin Turner (LAD 3B) was placed on the disabled list retroactive to July 27 because of a skin infection on his right thigh. Expect him to return as soon as he is eligible.
  • C.J. Wilson (LAA SP) was sent to the disabled list retroactive to July 29 because of inflammation in his left elbow after the Astros roughed him up for six runs in four innings. “Every pitcher out there pitching in the major leagues is nicked up to some point,” stated Angels manager Mike Scioscia. “It got to the point with C.J.’s elbow it was tough for him to make the pitches he needed to.” Remember that Wilson had fluid drained from the elbow earlier this season. Further tests showed left elbow impingement secondary to arthritis and surgery is warranted in order to fix this problem before it causes issues in Wilson’s shoulder. He can be dropped in all formats.
