Sleeper Starts for Week 5 (Fantasy Football)

Dorial Green-Beckham has the size and opportunity to make an impact against the Bills

An easy sleeper start this week would probably be Owen Daniels since the Broncos are playing the Raiders (see their stats against tight ends), but it’s so obvious that he doesn’t even qualify. Now if you start Keith Mumphery Thursday night, over half your league will be wondering “who?” The point is, sleeper candidates are meant to surprise and that’s why we’ve asked our featured experts to name deep sleepers (outside the top 105 FLEX rankings) that have upside this week.

On the flip side, there are some tough matchups ahead for players you would typically start, and you should be wary of the disappointment that the names below may bring you come gameday.

If you don’t see any of your players listed below, be sure to check out our Who Should I Start? tool. You can also import your team into My Playbook for instant suggestions specific to your players.

Q1. Give us a player outside of our top 105 Flex that represents a deep sleeper start and tell us why you think he has upside this week.

Dorial Green-Beckham – WR, TEN vs. BUF
“The Bills are have allowed almost 300 passing yards per game and 10 total passing touchdowns. Tennessee can’t run the ball, so DGB is already its best goal-line option. With an expanding role after the bye, Green-Beckham could add some yards to his TD-or-bust repertoire.”
Matt Lutovsky (Sporting News)

“I am liking Dorial Green-Beckham a bit this week.  With Tennessee coming off the bye, I expect them to get Green-Beckham more involved in the offense. He has already showed the ability to overpower defenders around the goal line, now he just needs to run more routes and get involved in the game plan. This could be the week they start to use him more.”
Dennis Esser (Coach Esser)

Jermaine Kearse – WR, SEA at CIN
“We’re talking deep sleeper here, so give me 124th ranked Jermaine Kearse. He only had two targets on Monday, but he caught them both for 84 yards. The previous week he caught every one of his six targets. He is the Seahawks’ #1 wideout and he is facing a Bengals defense that has allowed 17 receptions to some shaky wide receiver corps each of the past two weeks (the Ravens and the Chiefs).”
Dave McKay (The Fantasy Sports Brain)

Keith Mumphery – WR, HOU vs. IND
“Who?! Cecil Shorts is out with a shoulder injury. In Week 4, DeAndre Hopkins led the Texans with 22 targets. Shorts tallied 10 targets. After that, Mumphery was third on the list with seven targets. Look for him to expand on that total on Thursday night.”
Adam Meyer (Fox Sports)

Jamison Crowder – WR, WAS at ATL
“This week for a deep sleeper, I am very high on Jamison Crowder of Washington. Crowder is quickly getting Kirk Cousins’ trust, as he has 13 receptions on 18 targets for 110 yards the last two weeks. Washington also has a great matchup this week against an Atlanta secondary that has given up 305 yards passing per game, and 7.1 yards per pass. It looks like DeSean Jackson may be a week away, and Crowder has slotted himself nicely into the second Washington receiver slot.”
Dan Yanotchko (EDSFootball)

Q2. On the flip side, what player inside the top 40 Flex is likely to disappoint fantasy owners this week?

Jeremy Hill – RB, CIN vs. SEA
“I said it before the season and I’ll say it again after three touchdowns last week… I just don’t see an elite runner when I watch Jeremy Hill. He may continue to get goal line looks and Seattle might not be as formidable as they once were, but Hill is his still his real-life team’s RB2 and this is still not a good matchup. In other words: this isn’t a volume play or a matchup play, and Hill is ranked at #27.”
Dave McKay (The Fantasy Sports Brain)

“Sure, the three TDs in Week 4 were great, but Hill had just nine touches. Giovani Bernard was still Option 1a to Hill’s 1b. With Seattle coming to town, yards and TDs won’t be as easy to come by.”
Matt Lutovsky (Sporting News)

Joseph Randle – RB, DAL vs. NE
“The second Tony Romo went down with his shoulder injury, I thought Randle would be the one to profit. For one game, I was right. Randle rushed for 87 yards and three TDs against the Falcons. However, in the following week, he was held in check. Even with Lance Dunbar out, Randle only recorded 26 rushing yards against the Saints. New England is notorious for taking away the opposing offenses’ best weapon. I expect Bill Belichick to focus on stopping the running game and make Brandon Weeden throw.”
Adam Meyer (Fox Sports)

Carlos Hyde – RB, SF at NYG
“I think Carlos Hyde will disappoint again this week as he faces a Giants defense that has been decent against the run. New/old defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has the Giants defense gang tackling and staying with their assignments. With Landon Collins getting better each week, I think the 49ers may have a tough night in Jersey.”
Dennis Esser (Coach Esser)

“I am certainly staying away from Carlos Hyde this week, as he has been getting worse the past three weeks, and now he faces the leagues best rushing defense in the Giants. The Giants have only allowed 69.8 yards per game rushing so far this year, and have limited opposing ball carriers to 3.1 yards per rush. Hyde has also seen his totals drop over the last three games as well, posting the following splits of 43, 51, and 20 yards. I predict a tough day for Hyde, as the Giants are the worst possible match up. ”
Dan Yanotchko (EDSFootball)
