RBBC Review: Week 12

Ameer Abdullah is receiving the bulk of the carries, but is he worth starting?

The 2015 season has been close to the worst yet for the running back by committee (RBBC). There are not too many lead backs who carry the ball 20-30 times a game anymore. Fantasy owners are stuck with running backs who share carries, so they have to gamble each and every week.

Injuries, poor performances and the emergence of new backs are the main cause for RBBCs but don’t worry because we’re going to be able to tell you which backs to start, sit, add and drop for good. Here is a summary of all RBBCs coming into Week 12.

Cincinnati Bengals – Jeremy Hill/Giovani Bernard
I said last week that Bernard was going to have a good night, and he did. Bernard posted six carries for 18 yards but was an absolute monster in the passing game recording eight catches for 128 yards. Hill also had a solid fantasy night, carrying the ball 13 times for 45 yards and two touchdowns. Both of these RBs had good fantasy weeks, and I think that trend will continue. Hill and Bernard have had over 10 points in the same week three times.

The Bengals are up against a tough defense in the St. Louis Rams this week, but I would still start either RB. If Hill does what he did last week in the run game and Bernard performs as well as he did last week in the passing game, both RBs are worth the start.

Denver Broncos – Ronnie Hillman/C.J. Anderson
Last week when I indicated that Hillman and Anderson were both worth starting, I was somewhat incorrect. Hillman had 21 carries for 102 yards, and Anderson had 12 carries for 59 yards and two receptions for 13 yards. Neither of these RBs scored but still posted some pretty good numbers, although they did not have impressive fantasy performances.

The Broncos are playing the Patriots this week, and they are ranked second in the league against the run. This will be a tough matchup for both RBs, so if you can sit both of them, do it. With Osweiler at QB, I don’t think the Broncos’ offense will produce much firepower, which means they won’t be able to get the run game going.

Detroit Lions – Ameer Abdullah/Joique Bell/Theo Riddick
I don’t think you can start any RB in this backfield, but Abdullah looks like he is starting to get the bulk of the carries in the backfield. Abdullah had 16 carries for 63 yards this week against the Eagles while Bell had seven carries and Riddick had two carries. Like I’ve said with other RBs this season, none of these RBs are good enough to produce quality fantasy numbers.

The Lions are playing the Packers next week, but I wouldn’t start any of these RBs. They’re all too unpredictable and inconsistent to start one. If you’re in a really deep league, go ahead and start Abdullah or Bell, but with caution.

Green Bay Packers – Eddie Lacy/James Starks
Looks like Eddie Lacy is the starter again in Green Bay. Lacy had 17 carries for 105 yards and four catches for 34 yards and a touchdown in Week 12. Starks had seven carries for 39 yards and four catches for 41 yards. Lacy was the starter on Thankgiving and there’s no reason for that to change next week.

It’s safe to say that head coach Mike McCarthy has gained his faith back in the former Alabama RB. Lacy should do well against the Lions next week. Start Lacy as a confident RB2 next week.

Houston Texans – Alfred Blue/Chris Polk/Jonathan Grimes
Alfred Blue dominated the carries last week against a tough Jets’ defense. Blue had 21 carries for 58 yards and three receptions for 34 yards and a touchdown. Grimes had six carries for 37 yards, and Chris Polk did not record a single carry due to an injury that held him out of Week 11. Surprisingly, Blue had a good fantasy week against the best run defense in the NFL.

The Texans are up against an awful Saints’ defense this week, so I would go ahead and start Blue as a low RB2 or a high-end flex. Blue should have a solid week because if last week was any indication, no one will be taking his carries.

Tennessee Titans – Antonio Andrews/Dexter McCluster
Playing in primetime, Antonio Andrews led the Tennessee backfield with 15 carries for 78 yards. He also accumulated 16 yards through the air off of two catches. The other back, Dexter McCluster had a quiet night posting only 18 receiving yards from two catches.

Andrews is clearly the lead back between himself, McCluster and David Cobb. His only threat for carries is quarterback, Marcus Mariota. Mariota had 29 yards and a touchdown from five carries. Andrews plays a below average Oakland defense and should be a solid flex option heading into Week 12.
