Matt Forte could be a great fit for the Patriots

The Chicago Bears have just confirmed that they will not re-sign Matt Forte. It’s safe to speculate that the New England Patriots may have interest in him. Forte would fit right into their offense and even be a major player in the Patriots’ passing game.

James White currently holds that role and did a fair job toward the tail end of the season. However, you can’t really compare his play to the impact Forte would have. Forte is a doubled-edged sword. He can be effective as a rusher and receiver.

The Patriots need a dynamic player like Forte in order to get the most usage from Tom Brady’s small remaining window. He only has a few years of great play left. Bill Belichick is going to want to make the most out of it by singing a player like Forte.

The action Forte would probably see is the same Shane Vereen used to when he was a Patriot. He would be used on third down conversions, screens, and passing out of the backfield. If Forte becomes a Patriot, he could potentially be one of the top PPR fantasy running backs in 2016, despite the questions that always surround New England’s backfield.

Forte could potentially resume his role as a first-round pick in fantasy drafts if he signs with the Patriots, especially in PPR formats, depending on his projected role. He could recapture some of the form he showed back when Marc Trestman was the coach of the Bears. Forte rushed for 1,038 yards and caught 102 receptions for 808 yards in 2014.

Forte put up those numbers with Jay Cutler as his quarterback. Take a minute to sit back and think about if Brady was his quarterback instead. While Forte may not receive as many attempts at this stage of his career, he could still provide solid value in the right system. New England would certainly qualify.
