Fantasy Outlook: Dee Gordon

Dee Gordon may see regression in 2016, but he is a stellar fantasy asset.

2015 Season Recap
For the second straight year, Dee Gordon topped the list of base stealers with 58 bags in 78 attempts. He got on-base at a career-high .359 OBP and scored 82 runs. The 27-year-old led the league with 205 hits including 28 doubles and eight triples. His stunning .333 AVG put him second behind Miguel Cabrera but ahead of Bryce Harper and Paul Goldschmidt in race for the batting title.

2016 Season Outlook
With two years of high quality production in three categories (runs, stolen bases and batting average), Dee Gordon has become a safe pick in the third round of your draft.

Part of the reason for his success is that he is swinging at many more pitches than before (38% outside the strike zone compared to 33% in 2014 and 65% inside the strike zone compared to 57% in 2014) but he is still making contact at a near-elite rate of 88%. To put that in perspective, Joey Votto, widely recognized for his tremendous judgement skills, has a 79% contact rate.

Stolen bases across the league were down by 10% in 2015 and the number of players swiping at least 20 bags dropped from 39 in 2014 to just 24 last year. Elite base stealers are becoming more valuable. Dee Gordon swiped 20 more than fellow second baseman Jose Altuve and hit a mind-blowing 107 points higher than the league’s other elite base stealer, Billy Hamilton. Although there is likely to be regression from the .333 batting average, his speed and contact skills make a .300+ AVG look attainable.

He will continue to leadoff for the Marlins and a full season from Giancarlo Stanton in the number three slot could result in the speedster scoring 100 runs this year.
