Nathan Eovaldi’s career numbers make him suspect, but his 2016 campaign is showing promise

The anticipation for Jose Berrios and Sean Manaea has created spikes in their ownership and if you’re in a dynasty league, well, they’re likely already gone. Then there’s the list of players who are already owned by most leagues, but may be floating around on a waiver wire here and there.

On the other hand, there’s a handful of players that sit with lower ownership and the pundits have picked out which ones you should consider adding. These names below are owned in under 25% of Yahoo leagues. Just because they’re not prized rookies doesn’t mean they can’t provide a boost to your roster.

Q1. What hitter should fantasy owners look into picking up that is owned in less than 25% of Yahoo Leagues?

Joe Mauer (1B – MIN)
Ownership: 21%
“It’s hard to believe that Mauer qualifies for this distinction, but I fully acknowledge he’s no longer the perennial MVP candidate he once was. He’s no longer catcher-eligible either, which is really where the rub lies. However, what he is currently is a 1B/CI option who won’t hurt your batting average and should only continue to produce in other categories as the Twins’ offense rounds into shape. Yes, he won’t hit for power, but you could do a lot worse to fill out your lineup.”
Mark Ross (Athlon Sports)

Brandon Moss (1B,OF – STL)
Ownership: 20%
“Hi! I’m top-15 in Runs, top-35 in RBI and have hit five home runs. Who am I? Brandon Moss. Sure, Moss is slump prone and doesn’t face lefties much, but that second point is why he’s a great option in daily roster transaction leagues. Even with barely playing against lefties, Moss still has those numbers, and avoiding lefties will keep his average from tanking. The Cardinals lineup is still one of the best in the league, which means as long as Moss is in it, numbers will follow.”

Ketel Marte (SS – SEA)
Ownership: 23%
“Marte is in the midst of a 7 game hit streak, in which he’s hitting .433 with 7 runs scored. He’s always a threat to steal a base, too. Marte is a great resource to have on your bench in daily leagues when you need to play catch-up in Runs or SB.”
Tim Young (Brewer Rat)

Q2. What pitcher should fantasy owners look into picking up that is owned in less than 25% of Yahoo Leagues?

Nathan Eovaldi (SP – NYY)
Ownership: 17%
“Somehow Eovaldi is only owned in 17% of leagues. His past full-season/career stats don’t tell the whole story, since his splitter is so recently added. His ERA is inflated by uncharacteristic home run balls. After his most recent strong outing, he has 28 Ks and 5 BBs through 24.2 IP.”
Tim Young (Brewer Rat)

Steven Wright (SP – BOS)
Ownership: 22%
“Knuckeballers are tricky to trust, but maybe Boston’s Steven has the (ahem) Wright stuff? Bad puns aside, the right-hander has gone 4-for-4 in quality starts after holding the Braves to two runs (1 ER) over seven innings Wednesday night. He has nearly a strikeout (25) per inning (26 1/3), has kept the walks (11) manageable, and the ball in the park (1 HR allowed). At minimum, I think he has shown enough to merit serious streaming consideration.”
Mark Ross (Athlon Sports)

Jeremy Hellickson (SP – PHI)
Ownership: 12%
“I think the obvious pick is Chris Tillman, and he could easily top 25% ownership soon, so I’ll go deeper to Hellickson. The Phillies will make it tough for Hellickson to rack up wins, but he’s carrying a 9.7 K/9 with his 3.81 ERA and 1.19 WHIP. Those numbers equal a starter that should be owned in all 12-team or larger leagues. Hellickson will have an occasional rough outing, but you can avoid the tough matchups and enjoy a solid ERA and WHIP with nice strikeout totals. Don’t chase wins, just add Hellickson and enjoy his three-category boost.”
