Fantasy Baseball Daily Update: Tuesday (5/3)
Nomar Mazara

Nomar Mazara led the Rangers to victory at the plate and in the field Monday

A small slate of games did not limit the fantasy impact of Monday. Whether it was division rivalries or April’s hot teams moving their strong play into May, Monday’s slate did not disappoint. A late-inning battle in Toronto will open this daily update for May 3, 2016.

Recap

Rookie’s sensational game leads Rangers over Blue Jays
Nomar Mazara hit a game-winning home run in the top of the eighth to give the Rangers the lead and then threw out Michael Saunders at home in the bottom of the eighth inning to preserve Texas’ 2-1 win over the Blue Jays. A.J. Griffin only allowed one run over six innings of work, striking out nine batters, but Mazara, who now has three home runs and an .872 OPS, was the story of the night. Kevin Pillar finished 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored for the Blue Jays, who wasted a quality start from R.A. Dickey, allowing one run in six innings.

Mets use great pitching performance to beat Braves
Bartolo Colon pitched six shutout innings, striking out seven batters without a walk, to beat the Braves 4-1 on Monday night. David Wright, Yoenis Cespedes, and Lucas Duda each had home runs for the Mets, as Colon saw his ERA drop to 2.56 for the season. Cespedes moved to eight home runs and 25 RBI. Adonis Garcia finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored for Atlanta, but Mike Foltynewicz allowed four runs in 3 2/3 innings for the loss at Citi Field.

Cubs rough up Pirates’ ace
Gerrit Cole allowed six runs in 4 2/3 innings and Jason Hammel fired five strong innings to give the Cubs a win over the Pirates. Hammel is now 4-0 on the season. Ben Zobrist and David Ross each finished with two RBI for Chicago while Anthony Rizzo clocked two doubles for the North Siders. Andrew McCutchen hit his sixth home run of the season for the Pirates while Jordy Mercer had three hits, but the Pirates could not keep the Cubs’ offense at bay.

Bats support Giants’ ace in return to Cincinnati
Johnny Cueto was not at the top of his game, allowing six runs in five innings, but the Giants’ offense supported him in his return to Cincinnati leading to a 9-6 Giants win. Cueto did strikeout eight batters, and Brandon Crawford finished 2-for-5 with a three-run home run and finished with four RBI to help the Giants erased a 6-3 deficit. Joey Votto finished 1-for-4 with a three-run home run, his third of the season, and Brandon Finnegan allowed three runs in six innings for a quality start.

Nationals blank Royals
Gio Gonzalez only allowed two walks and four hits over six shutout innings to move to 2-1 on the season in the Nationals’ 2-0 win over the Royals. Ryan Zimmerman finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI and Daniel Murphy finished 3-for-4 with an RBI as the Nationals moved to 18-7. Edinson Volquez allowed two runs in 7 2/3 innings, striking out seven batters in a hard-luck loss.

What to Watch For

A battle of the Sox will be the featured matchup of the night, as Jose Quintana and the White Sox will face off  with Steven Wright and the Red Sox. Quintana has had back-to-back scoreless appearances and a 1.47 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 30 2/3 innings this season. Wright has allowed two runs or fewer in each of his four starts this season and has pitched at least six innings in each start. Jake Arrieta, Jeff Samardzija and Sonny Gray will also pitch today.
