Khris Davis’ power makes him worth a look in fantasy leagues

Six weeks into the season, owners are getting an idea of which waiver wire candidates may be turning a hot start into a productive fantasy campaign.

Ownership totals are in ESPN Leagues as of Saturday.

Khris Davis (OF – OAK): 32.9 percent
After a slow start, many owners were cutting bait on Davis early on in the season. However, Davis looks to be back to his old homer-happy ways, and can provide some cheap power on the waiver wire.

Davis has been a productive fantasy asset over the past two years with the Milwaukee Brewers thanks to his tremendous raw power. Over those seasons, Davis slugged 49 home runs in just shy of 1,000 plate appearances and ran an encouraging 10 percent walk rate in 2015.

Those power numbers were going to decrease moving from Miller Park to the O.co Coliseum, but Davis still can hit enough home runs to be fantasy relevant. After not hitting a home run until April 21 of this year, Davis is suddenly up to six on the season with a recent hot streak. If owners can rotate outfield spots, Davis is a great play on the road, and can even provide some value in Oakland if he keeps this pace up.

Jackie Bradley Jr. (OF – BOS): 23.7 percent
Bradley Jr. is always going to be a better player in real life than fantasy due to his excellent glove and light hitting ability. However, he’s better with the bat than he’s shown in his early MLB career, and may finally be putting it all together in 2016.

The 26-year-old struggled in his first full season in 2014, posting a horrific wRC+ mark of 46 in 423 plate appearances. That mark rose all the way to 121 in 2015, as Bradley Jr. went on a tear after being called up in late June.

Bradley Jr. has repeated that 121 mark to start this season, including a career-best .276 average. Over a current 11-game hitting streak, Bradley Jr. has raised his OPS 200 points and has the upside to maintain this pace. Boston’s park and lineup will help Bradley Jr.’s counting stats, and he can provide owners with a handful of steals over the course of the season.

Tyler Chatwood (SP – COL): 12.6 percent
Rarely do Rockies pitchers carry any fantasy value due to the difficulties associated with Coors Field. However, Chatwood has emerged as a prime streaming candidate following a number of strong outings to start the year.

The lowest road ERA in the majors belongs to Chatwood at 0.33. Chatwood has not allowed an earned run on the road over his last 14.1 innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres, with 11 strikeouts over that timeframe.

Chatwood’s stuff is good enough to be a play in fantasy, and a groundball rate of over 50 percent certainly helps his case. Of course, the inability to throw breaking balls at Coors Field means owners can’t play him every start, but those with an open spot should consider adding him for road outings.

Adam Conley (SP – MIA): 24.3 percent
It’s time to start believing in Conley, who has gone from deep waiver wire candidate to legitimate mid-rotation fantasy starter.

The 25-year-old had a decent enough under the radar debut in 2015 with a 3.76 ERA (3.81 FIP) over 67 innings. This year is even better, as Conley’s ERA is down to 3.06 (3.48 FIP) with over a strikeout per inning in six starts.

As that strikeout total would indicate, Conley has very good raw stuff with a solid four-pitch mix, and he used it to throw 7.2 innings of no-hit ball two weeks ago against the Brewers. Command has always been a problem, and Conley indeed walks lots of batters but has typically done a great job of keeping the ball in the park to limit the damage.
