Week 6 Start/Sit (Fantasy Football)

Charles Clay could go off against a terrible 49ers team as the primary receiving threat for Buffalo

It wasn’t a great start to the week after Thursday night’s game unless you started Hunter Henry and Josh Lambo. Besides those two, you’re likely looking for better performances on Sunday and Monday. Unfortunately, it’s inevitable that some players are going to disappoint while some others you weren’t counting on are going to surprise.

We’re asking our featured experts below to try and help identify who some of these names will be ahead fo the upcoming games.

If you don’t see any of your players listed below, be sure to check out our Who Should I Start? tool. You can also import your team into My Playbook for instant suggestions specific to your players.

Q1. Give us a player outside of our top 100 Flex that represents a deep sleeper start.

Charles Clay (TE – BUF): vs. SF
“Clay returned to practice on Thursday, and has an increased role in the offense thanks, in part, to the Bills’ decimated receiving corps. Against a hapless 49ers squad that’s in complete disarray, Clay might end up as a top-10 play at the tight end position this week.”
Shawn Drotar (5280 Sports Network)

Jamison Crowder (WR – WAS): vs. WAS
“I’m shocked to see Jamison Crowder ranked at WR57 this week, with Jordan Reed looking unlikely to suit up and a matchup against the Eagles. Philadelphia has been strong defensively this season, but Crowder is set for an increase in workload against them. In the first three games of the season, he posted 175 yards receiving with three scores, drawing seven or more looks in each game. I’m counting on a similar workload this week, and while the end zone may be hard to find against an Eagles team that has allowed just one receiver to score in four games, I think he has a safe floor as a feature of the Washington offense.”
Jon Collins (Fantasy Sports LR)

Jesse James (TE – PIT): at MIA
“I think the player with the most upside outside of the top 100 could be Jesse James. Pittsburgh is facing a Miami defense that has given up the seventh-most fantasy points to tight ends this season. The tight ends with better matchups ahead of him are either securely within the top 100 or have nowhere near the level of talent he does. In tight end premium leagues, he could produce a very nice bump this week.”
The FFGhost (Dynasty League Football)

Brandon LaFell (WR – CIN): at NE
“LaFell will face his former employer this week, and I think the Patriots will be putting plenty of attention towards stopping A.J. Green. This likely means shifting a safety a bit to help out Logan Ryan, which could pay dividends for LaFell. While I don’t expect a repeat of last week’s performance, I do think it’s probable that LaFell puts up strong numbers again this week.”
Adam Sutton (DraftStars)

Anquan Boldin (WR – DET): vs. LAR
“Boldin may be dealing with an ankle issue, and he’s a 36-year-old who has seen his targets decline, but he remains a reliable and regular part of the Lions offense, playing as many snaps as Marvin Jones last week, and has been more productive than Golden Tate. When it comes to this week’s matchup against Los Angeles, Boldin has had more success against the Rams than against any other team in his career, and that includes 90-plus yards in four of the past five games against the Rams, and touchdowns in four of his past five games against the Rams. That’s good enough to slide into a Flex spot.”
Scott Cullen (TSN)

Chris Conley (WR – KC): at OAK
“The player outside the top 100 flex plays I’m looking at is Chiefs WR Chris Conley. The Raiders are looking to shadow Jeremy Maclin with their top corner and Conley has seen his usage climb over the last few weeks. In a game that should have some opportunities to go vertical, I like the upside that Conley brings.”
Adam Inman (FFLockerRoom)

Q2. On the flip side, what player inside the top 35 Flex is likely to disappoint fantasy owners this week?

Julio Jones (WR – ATL): at SEA
“Don’t let that recent 300-yard game fool you; Jones has run hot and cold all season long. He was limited by the Broncos’ Aqib Talib in the Falcons’ big road win last week, and now he’ll have to deal with Richard Sherman in Seattle. That and a sore knee that’s limited him in practice this week, makes Jones a surprisingly high-risk play.”
Shawn Drotar (5280 Sports Network)

“If I’m looking at a high-end player about which to be skeptical, I’ll take a run at Julio Jones. Aside from the monstrous 12-catch, 300-yard effort against Carolina, his season has been fairly ordinary – with 12 catches on 26 targets for 217 yards in his other four games. The Seahawks are allowing 201.3 passing yards per game, which ranks second in the league, and Jones will be their number one focus. Of course, the upside of a player that can put up 300 receiving yards in a game means that you can’t reasonably sit Jones, but you have to know that going into Seattle is not conducive to the best production for any receiver, even a great one.”
Scott Cullen (TSN)

Ezekiel Elliott (RB – DAL): at GB
“We’re ranking Jamaal Charles fairly aggressively in his first game back, but I think as long as the workload is there he should be productive for the Chiefs. I’m more worried about a back much higher up the food chain. He’ll be hard to bench and probably sees enough workload to justify being in your lineup, but I don’t trust Ezekiel Elliot against Green Bay. This Packers D is legit against the run, having allowed an average of 2.18 YPC to opposing RBs this year with just a single rushing touchdown yielded. Again, as a cornerstone of the Dallas offense, he’ll have every chance to reverse that trend but this could be a 20 carry, 65-yard type of outing and if Zeke can’t find the end zone, his owners will be left wanting.”
Jon Collins (Fantasy Sports LR)

Jamaal Charles (RB – KC): at OAK
“I think it’s just way too early to put Jamaal Charles this high as a flex play. There are just too many question marks surrounding his health, conditioning, and usage to take that plunge just yet. He should see more work and might even have a decent outing but there’s just too much risk here for me to feel safe recommending him this high.”
The FFGhost (Dynasty League Football)

Brandon Marshall (WR – NYJ): at ARI
“While I expect an uptick in volume for Marshall with Eric Decker on the shelf, this is one of the worst possible scenarios for the wideout this week. Marshall figures to see plenty of Patrick Peterson, who grades out as a top 10 corner according to Pro Football Focus. The issue is that it’s tough to sit someone like Marshall, but don’t be surprised if you’re disappointed Monday evening.”
Adam Sutton (DraftStars)

DeAndre Hopkins (WR – HOU): vs. IND
“The player I expect to disappoint (again) is Houston Texans wide receiver, Deandre Hopkins. His usage is way down, the weapons around him have gotten significantly better, and his quarterback has been a disaster and looks spooked. Add that to a Colts defense that hasn’t been completely awful and you get a high-priced option with a low-priced floor. I see 10+ WRs behind him I’d be comfortable playing in his place.”
Adam Inman (FFLockerRoom)
