Marlins acquire Prado, Phelps from Yankees

by Jeff Rosenberg | Sat, Dec 20th 10:25am EST

The Miami Marlins and New York Yankees have completed a trade that sees 2B/3B/OF Martin Prado and RHP David Phelps move to Miami. The Yankees acquired SP Nathan Eovaldi, 1B/OF Garrett Jones and RHP Domingo German, while also chipping in $6M to the Marlins towards Prado’s $22M remaining salary. (ESPNNewYork.com)

Fantasy Impact:

The move makes a lot more sense for the Marlins in reality than it does for you and I in fantasy. Prado is a veteran player who played his first seven MLB seasons with the Atlanta Braves in the NL East, appearing on the NL All-Star Team in 2010. He’ll find himself somewhere in the middle of this new-look Miami order amongst Giancarlo Stanton, Michael Morse and Marcell Ozuna, and could even see time batting second against lefties. Prado’s ending 2014 line was .282/.321/.412, which overall represented a down year for the nine year MLB vet. Prado’s fantasy value comes in the form of his position versatility, as he’ll be 2B, 3B and OF eligible this year. He projects as a late round flier with limited upside to fill a hole at second or third, or as a warm body off the bench in standard leagues. A return to his career average of a .340 OBP is likely, but so is a regression to .429 slugging, compared to the .541 he slugged in 37 games in the Bronx. Prado should find himself around his career average .291/.340/.429 with 13 home runs and 70 RBI. His career average of 80 runs doesn’t seem attainable unless Christian Yelich secedes the two-spot in the order.
