Ben Zobrist on the Yankees radar but the Rays may not be a good partner

by Chris Zolli | Wed, Dec 31st 3:36pm EST

The Yankees are in dire need of a 2B and a pending free agent like Ben Zobrist would be a great fit, but the Yankees and Rays have only made one trade before, a 2006 trade that netted the Yankees Nick Green. (Twitter)

Fantasy Impact:

Ben Zobrist is exactly the player that the Yankees need and would essentially be an upgrade over Martin Prado, a player that filled a similar role in the second half of 2014 before being traded to the Marlins. On top of the fact that Zobrist is less expensive than Prado, Zobrist averages a WAR of 6.2 over the past six seasons, never going beneath 4.5, while Prado's top WAR in his career was only 5.5 in 2012. Zobrist has struggled over the past two seasons, only posting a .753 OPS, but has three 20 home run seasons in the past six seasons while averaging 16 steals at a 76% ratio. Zobrist has played 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, and each of the OF in his career and is still a top-75 player because of his eligibility at 2B/SS/OF for 2015. Zobrist is the type of player whose versility is vital to a fantasy roster and would be a welcome addition to the Yankees as well as a fantasy team.
