Yasiel Puig's slump continues amid manager's critical comments

by Eric Westlund | Tue, Jun 30th 3:08am EDT

Yasiel Puig was dropped to fifth in the Dodgers' batting order for Monday's game against the Diamondbacks, going 0-for-4 to drop his triple slash to .289 / .382 / .465. The apparent demotion in the lineup coincides with manager Don Mattingly's comments over the weekend seemingly critical of Puig's approach at the plate. (ESPN)

Fantasy Impact:

Puig's batting line is still good for a wRC+ of 139, and fantasy owners should not be concerned about his production as long as he remains healthy and in the lineup. Mattingly's comments are curious, not only because Puig's offensive production has been 39% better than league average, but because his plate discipline numbers have shown improvement over his career marks. Puig owns strikeout and walk rates of 16.8% and 11.5%, respectively, compared to 20.2% and 9.8% for his career.
