Zack Greinke wins despite allowing five first inning runs

by Stan Son | Thu, Aug 6th 5:45pm EDT

Zack Greinke got roughed up for five first inning runs Thursday against the Phillies. Despite that, he earned the win as he was able to pitch six innings, allowing a total of six earned runs on seven hits, walking two, and striking out eight. Greinke was also a force at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a home run. 69-of-111 pitches were thrown for strikes.

Fantasy Impact:

There was a huge discrepancy of Greinke's ERA (1.41) and FIP (2.58) entering Thursday's contest. After the game, his ERA spiked to 1.71. There could be some more regression in the works, but there have been many instances of pitchers maintaining a big spread between the two metrics. Just be aware that it's there. It was a pleasant surprise for the offense to pick up Greinke as he had pitched nine games where he allowed two or fewer runs and was either straddled with a loss or no-decision.
