Matt Wieters (elbow) will be Opening Day catcher

by Stephen Nemenz | Thu, Mar 31st 9:04pm EDT

Manager Buck Showalter confirmed that Matt Wieters will be behind the plate when the Orioles host the Twins April 4. There was speculation that Wieters may start the season primarily at DH as he continues to recover from an elbow injury. (Roch Kubatko on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact:

This is good news if you're a Wieters owners. Don't be surprised if the Orioles do tread lightly with their slugging catcher the first month of the season. This is a contract year for Wieters, so if you're a fantasy owner that believes in the "contract year theory", Wieters is someone you may want to target later in drafts. Wieters has an ECR of 207, but ranks ninth among starting catchers. Wieters has the ability and power, if healthy, to be a Top 5 catcher by seasons end.
