Amare Stoudemire is focused on defense

by Chris Zolli | Tue, Oct 21st 1:34pm EDT

An awful defender last year, Amare Stoudemire looks to become a better defensive asset this year. (ESPN)

Fantasy Impact:

Last year, Amar'e was rated 87th out of 88 qualified power forwards defensively but he has been relatively good defensively in his career. He averages 2.1 steals+blocks for his career and 8.3 rebounds; these are not great numbers but are much better than the second worst in the league for his position. If Amar'e can get his defensive statistics in line with career norms and get 15-18 points per game while staying healthy, he could be a decent mid to late round steal. There are a lot of "ifs" and "buts" in that considering his injury history but Amar'e was quoted as saying that he "feels like he is 19 again". Tempered expectations abound for the power forward, though he has his best outlook in three years.
