Julius Thomas expected to be released this offseason

ESPN's Mike DiRocco believes the Jacksonville Jaguars will part ways with tight end Julius Thomas this offseason. (ESPN)

Fantasy Impact:

Thomas was once regarded a top five tight end in the NFL. However, since signing with the Jaguars in 2015, he could not remain healthy. Thomas battled injuries during his two-year tenure in Jacksonville -- only playing in 21 of a potential 32 regular season games. He'll likely be heavily pursued in the offseason by tight end-needy teams that include the Jets and the Cardinals. However, don't count the Patriots out of the Thomas sweepstakes if he is ultimately released. Rob Gronkowski underwent his third back surgery of his professional career in 2016 and could be transitioned into a role player to better maintain his health. With Martellus Bennett an impending free agent, the Patriots do, in fact, have a need at tight end, especially with Gronkowski's health in question moving forward.
