GM speaks out on Roethlisberger's contract

by Dave Carroll | Mon, Jul 28th 5:48pm EDT

Despite the Steelers pushing back contract negotiations with Roethlisberger until the offseason, general manager Kevin Colbert said Monday he couldn't see “any circumstance that Ben won't end his career here (in Pittsburgh).” (Pitt Trib Review)

Fantasy Impact:

Colbert's statement was the most forceful made by the team that it fully expects to re-sign Roethlisberger, who has two seasons remaining on a contract he signed in 2008. Now that Roethlisberger knows the Steelers want him for sure, his future is in his hands. He can give the club a "hometown discount" or he can play "lights out" football to get a maximum deal. I think the truth will lie somewhere in the middle. Roethlisberger's stats over the past 3 years are: 2011 4077 yds/21 TDs/14 INTs (15 games), 2012 3265/26/8 (13 games) and 2013 4261/28/14 (16 games). Expect him to come close or even surpass his 2013 yards and TD totals while minimizing mistakes. His current projections (per Fantasy Pros) are 4240/28/14 which may be a little low. He may qualify for a maximum deal if he plays extremely well, but would probably take a slight discount to help the team out of any salary cap issues they may face next year.
