Pass protection helping Matt Asiata maintain a role in Vikings backfield

by Kevin C. Wilson | Fri, Oct 24th 10:13pm EDT

Despite being replaced in the starting lineup by rookie upstart Jerick McKinnon, Minnesota running back Matt Asiata will continue to play an important role in the Vikings backfield because of his ability in pass protection. Offensive coordinator Norv Turner indicated that Asiata's strength as a blocker insures that he will be on the field a lot when the Vikings are in passing situations. "I think we know McKinnon is improving and I think he's physically capable of being a good pass protector," Turner said. "Matt gives us a very good protector, so we need to continue using both in there." (1550 ESPN)

Fantasy Impact:

Even though Matt Asiata's fantasy value has plummeted since he was relegated to the backup role in Minnesota, he is still worth stashing on your bench. Expect Asiata to continue to relieve McKinnon for couple of series' per game and to continue to see action on passing downs and in goal-line situations. With that kind of workload Asiata can be considered as a desperation flex starter against Tampa Bay this weekend for fantasy owners that are dealing with bye weeks or injuries.
