Did Jay Gruden lie about Chris Thompson opening as third-down back?

According to CSN Washington reporters Tarik El-Bashir and Rich Tandler, Chris Thompson may not actually get the third-down back job, despite head coach Jay Gruden promising that Thompson would open the season in that role. (CSN Washington)

Fantasy Impact:

If the Redskins draft a running back who is well-versed in pass blocking, you'd have to believe that general manager Scot McCloughan will want the guy he handpicked to get the first crack at the job. A veteran free agent like Pierre Thomas has the experience that would give him an edge over Chris Thompson. Plus, Gruden was frustrated by all the injuries that put Thompson in and out of training camp last year. If Silas Redd is Thompson's only competition, then Thompson should have the gig, but the Redskins will definitely get one or two more backs, so Thompson may very well be the odd man out.
