Rumor: Scouts love Shane Carden's intangibles, hate everything else

An unnamed AFC National scout gave a backhanded compliment to East Carolina QB Shane Carden, stating "[Carden] looks like he's throwing a javelin, and he is on the wrong side of where we want quarterbacks to be in terms of athleticism, arm strength and accuracy, but his intangibles are way up there. I absolutely love his competitive nature, but I wish he had better traits."

Fantasy Impact

The pyramid of athletic success starts with a foundation of, surprisingly, actually being athletic, which is looks like Carden is not. While a weak QB class will likely inflate his draft status, Carden profiles as a long-time backup QB, which you shouldn't be rostering in even the deepest of dynasty formats.

Shane Carden not looking the part during Senior Bowl practices

DraftBreakdown.com's Bryan Perez named former East Carolina Pirate Shane Carden a loser of Senior Bowl week, stating “From a technical standpoint, his elongated release just won’t work in the league. The ball fluttered out of his hand and lacked any velocity. Poor ball placement. I really do hope I’m wrong, but he didn’t look the part of an NFL quarterback."

Fantasy Impact

As proven in the cases of Byron Leftwich, Vince Young, and Tim Tebow, the words "elongated release" are the kiss of QB death. Carden is projected to be taken somewhere between rounds five and six of the NFL Draft, and it wouldn't surprise me if he slipped out of the draft entirely after this week. He'll need to land in an extremely fantasy-friendly system to have a hope of being relevant for fantasy purposes.
