Tyrann Mathieu inks extension with Saints

New Orleans Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu has signed a one-year extension with the team to remain in the Big Easy for the next two years.

Fantasy Impact

Mathieu was approaching the final year of his deal but now he will remain in New Orleans for the next two seasons. This deal helped the Saints financially as well, helping lower his cap hit in 2024. Mathieu had four interceptions, 75 tackles and nine passes defended in 2023 while recording an 87.4 PFF coverage grade.

Tyrann Mathieu active for Week 1

Tyrann Mathieu is active for the Saints’ Week 1 matchup with Atlanta.

Fantasy Impact

Mathieu missed practice with an illness and was listed as questionable heading into Sunday. If Mathieu was unable to go, there would have been a void at after since the Saints traded C.J. Gardner-Johnson to Philadelphia. With Matthieu active, the Saints DST is strong option against Atlanta in Week 1.

Tyrann Mathieu (illness) missed practice, questionable

New Orleans S Tyrann Mathieu missed practice with an illness and is listed as questionable ahead of the Saints' Week 1 matchup with the Atlanta Falcons, according to ESPN's Field Yates.

Fantasy Impact

Mathieu was one of the Saints' big offseason acquisitions and is expected to play a major role. The team was confident in their safety/slot group enough to the point where they shipped off C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Philadelphia Eagles. Mathieu will likely be good to go against the Falcons and, against what looks like a weak offense, the Saints DST is a strong streaming defense for opening week.

Tyrann Mathieu is signing with the Saints

According to Ian Rapoport, the Saints are signing veteran safety Tyrann Mathieu.

Fantasy Impact

After weeks of negotiating and several visits with the Saints, the former All-Pro safety has committed to sign with the team. The terms of the contract remain unknown but this is the largest post-draft acquisition to date. During his time with the Chiefs, Mathieu racked up three consecutive Pro-Bowl appearances as well as being voted a first-team All-Pro during his 2020 season.

Tyrann Mathieu to resume talks with Saints

The New Orleans Saints are expected to resume talks with free agent safety Tyrann Mathieu.

Fantasy Impact

The Saints are now thin at the safety position, having Marcus Williams leave in free agency and Malcom Jenkins retire this offseason. They failed to land a safety in the draft, and it appears they are now setting their sights back on Mathieu and will make an aggressive push to sign him. The veteran safety would help fill the gap in the Saints' defense and bring good veteran leadership.
