Week 3 Accuracy Scores: Which Experts Came Out on Top?

report card imageThe third week of the NFL season has come and gone which means it’s time to find out which experts were the most accurate with their week 3 rankings & projections. Whereas last week we looked at the top experts by position, this week we’re introducing an overall leaderboard that paints a complete picture of which experts are performing the best across the positions.

Note that the following breakdown is based off of a field of 39 experts. If you’re curious about how every expert stacks up against each other, you can visit our accuracy rankings page to see the results. The entire standings are offered at no cost to our registered members. Simply sign up for FREE and you’ll be able to view all of the accuracy scores!

For now, let’s take a look at the Week 3 Leaderboard as well as how the season-long results are shaping up with our Year-to-Date Leaderboard.

*Overall standings evaluate experts’ weekly rankings at the QB, RB, WR, & TE positions

Notes:

  • It was a great week for Brandon Funston from Yahoo! Sports. Of the 4 positions (QB, RB, WR, TE) we use to determine the overall accuracy leaders, he finished #1 for two of them (WR & TE). This marks the first time this year that an expert has finished as the leader of more than 1 position in a given week.
  • Funston had several key picks that gave him an advantage over everyone else. For the WR position, he slotted Brandon Marshall, Malcolm Floyd, and Jeremy Maclin with their highest ranks from any expert. In turn, each player rewarded Funston with a big day. As for the TEs, a big reason for Funston’s success was that he ranked top performers Dustin Keller, Tony Gonzalez and Jeremy Shockey ahead of the Expert Consensus. He was also less confident in Dallas Clark than most of the other experts which meant that Clark’s subpar performance (4.4 fantasy points) didn’t hurt Funston’s accuracy score as much as it did the other experts.
  • FFToolbox finished #3 in the weekly leaderboard behind the strength of having the best RB accuracy for the week. The staff at FFToolbox did a great job from top to bottom with their RB list and most notably had surprise performer, Peyton Hillis, ranked higher than any other expert that we monitored.
  • The top QB prognosticator for the week was Andy Behrens and this honor helped him earn the #4 overall position in our week 3 leaderboard. In what turned out to be a week of several surprise QB performances, Behrens didn’t always have the perfect QB picks but he frequently had the best picks. Specifically, of the top 10 fantasy QBs in week 3, he had 7 of the players ranked as well or better than the Expert Consensus. And since the Expert Consensus is representative of all the experts’ picks, outperforming it is a surefire way to do well in the accuracy standings.

Notes:

  • The first thing to note is just how tight the race is for the top spot. Josh Moore from 4for4.com currently holds the honor of occupying the #1 position but Sigmund Bloom from FootballGuys isn’t far behind. In fact, the results are so close that Moore is edging Bloom by roughly 1/1000th of a percentage point! With the standings so bunched together, it’s safe to say that we can expect plenty of movement in the top 5 over the coming weeks as the experts get more opportunities to make picks.

  • One of the important factors in Josh Moore’s success is that he has performed well in the early going across many of the key positions. For instance, while it’s common for many experts to do well at certain positions and struggle at others, Moore is currently ranked in the top 10 for his picks at QB (#1), WR (#3) and RB (#9). This type of consistency is valued by advice seekers and it’s a credit to Moore that he’s been able to perform well across the board given the tough competition.

  • John Paulsen from The Scores Report has taken a different approach to land in the top 5. While Paulsen has gravitated towards the middle of the pack with his rankings for QBs (#23) and TEs (#13), his picks at the RB (#2) and WR (#4) positions have been stellar. Given the importance of these two positions, they carry more weight than other spots do in determining our overall accuracy scores. As it stands right now, Paulsen is proving himself as a go-to-expert for advice related to these key positions and it has resulted in him earning the #3 slot in the YTD leaderboard.
  • Rounding out the top 5 are Chet Gresham (Razzball) and last year’s overall winner, Andy Behrens (Yahoo! Sports). While neither expert is #1 at any particular position, both have done a nice job with the consistency of their accuracy across the positions. In Gresham’s case, he is ranked in the top 10 for QBs (#6), RBs (#6) and TEs (#5). Behrens, on the other hand, occupies top 10 ranks for QBs (#2), WRs (#8) and TEs (#7). It’s interesting to note that Behrens also finished last year as the second most accurate expert at predicting QB performances. We’ll see if this holds up but so far Andy Behrens is proving once again that he is a great resource to follow for QB advice.

We’ll be back with another wrap-up next week to go over the week 4 accuracy results and to examine how the YTD leaderboard has changed. In the meantime, feel free to let us know if you have any questions or feedback regarding our accuracy process.

And, don’t forget, for a complete breakdown of all the experts for every position we track, be sure to check out our accuracy results page. Thanks!
