NFL Rookie Report: Week 3

Marcus Mariota turned in another solid week for fantasy purposes

Every week I will be doing a short review of the top five performances by rookies in terms of fantasy scoring and what to expect in their following matchup. All point totals are in standard scoring.

Marcus Mariota – QB – Tennessee Titans – 18.68
Mariota completed 27-of-44 passes for 367 yards and two touchdowns, but threw two costly interceptions in Sunday’s 35-33 loss to the Colts. Another solid fantasy performance, despite the two turnovers, by Mariota really solidifies my notion of him being a regular starter. He will have some bad games, but what quarterback doesn’t? One of his interceptions Sunday was clearly not his fault as the ball was caught and brought in by his target only to get hit and soar into the air right into the hands of the defense. Sadly that still counts against Mariota. Next week the Titans are on a bye, so if Mariota is your guy, you will need to find someone else for this week.

Karlos Williams – RB – Buffalo Bills – 17.00
Williams rushed for 110 yards on just 12 carries during Sunday’s win over Miami, including a 41-yard run to seal the game for Buffalo. He did not catch a pass. If Williams is available in your league, or you are a LeSean McCoy owner, you MUST go get him right now! McCoy is most likely going to sit out Week 4, or longer, to get his hamstring completely healed. Williams has scored a touchdown in all three of the Bills games this year as well as scoring over 11 points all three weeks. I strongly believe he will continue to put up numbers, even if McCoy is in the game. The Bills take on the Giants in Week 4, and Williams is a very solid RB2 or Flex play at running back.

Jameis Winston – QB – Tampa Bay Buccaneers – 12.44
Winston completed 17-of-36 passes for 261 yards with a touchdown and an interception in Sunday’s 19-9 loss to the Texans. Winston put together another decent performance against a tough Texans defense, despite having a sub-50 percent completion rate and throwing an interception. Winston saved himself from a terrible day by throwing a touchdown to running back Charles Sims. The Panthers come to town next week, and I do not like the matchup at all. I believe the Panthers defense is going to be able to shut down Winston and the Bucs, much like Houston did in Week 3. I suggest looking elsewhere in terms of a QB for Week 4.

Seth Roberts – WR – Oakland Raiders – 11.60
Roberts hauled in three catches for 56 yards and a touchdown in Oakland’s 27-20 win over Cleveland. Roberts had a solid outing, but it’s tough to expect the Week 3 performance consistently. I still believe Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree are the guys to own from the Raiders’ receiving corp. If the Raiders and Derek Carr continue to sling it like they have been, Roberts could be a good bench stash for later on.

Amari Cooper – WR – Oakland Raiders – 11.40
Cooper caught eight passes for 134 yards in Sunday’s Week 3 matchup against the Browns. The rookie pass-catcher was targeted 11 times on the day, which was far and away the most on the team. I absolutely love the matchup the Raiders have in Week 4 against the Bears. Chicago is a mess right now and without starting quarterback Jay Cutler, the Bears will most likely give the Raiders many opportunities to score. Cooper is a must start this week, especially in PPR formats. He could, and should, have a WR1 type day against the Bears this week.

* Keep an eye on Thomas Rawls (RB, Seattle Seahawks, 10.40) as Marshawn Lynch may have a lingering injury. Rawls could take over the bulk of the carries in the Seattle backfield.
