Fantasy Baseball: Last-Minute Draft Targets

Don’t miss your chance to grab a Cy Young candidate in the ninth

America is a land of procrastinators. We wait to file our taxes (hurry up, time running out!), we wait to fill out our March Madness brackets (that’s why your bracket is busted……ok, mine is too), and that’s why we all set our fantasy baseball drafts the final week before opening day, then somehow forget to do our research in time. If that is you, no need to worry, we’ve got you covered.

You can build cheat sheets for your specific league settings

You can see how the experts combine to rank each player

You can run mock drafts against the experts in just minutes

You can see aggregated consensus projections for every player

Now today, I am going to give you a special cheat sheet. Below are the players you should target in each of the first ten rounds of a standard league’s draft:

First Round: Nolan Arenado (COL, 3B)

Don’t buy into these conservative projections that are forecasting Arenado’s 2015 breakout to be somewhat of a fluke, the kid is still just 24 years old! If anything, he will likely improve from his .287, 42 homer, 130 RBI 2015 line. Drafting him in the top five isn’t as crazy as it seems.

Second Round: Jose Abreu (CHW, 1B)

We saw a considerable drop in production from the big fella last year, as his BA dropped 27 points, his OBP 36 points, and his SLG 79 points, but you can expect that to rebound to his 2014 totals now that he has Todd Frazier protecting him in 2016. With better pitches to hit, Abreu could be a legitimate Triple Crown threat this season.

Third Round: J.D. Martinez (DET, OF)

MLB’s leader in Hard Contact % (42.3%) had an unlucky year in 2015, posting just a .339 BABIP. If he continues to mash at that rate, we should see his BA climb over .300 to pair with 40 homers and 110 RBI. That is a top 15 player for the price of a late third-round pick.

Fourth Round: Jose Fernandez (MIA, SP)

When Jose Fernandez was 20 years old he posted the 8th best H/9 in the modern era for a single season. The only names above him: Nolan Ryan, Luis Tiant, Pedro Martinez and Dave McNally. They were all at least five years older. He may not be as dominant as Kershaw yet, but he is every bit as capable, and now that he is healthy, don’t hesitate to reach for him in the early fourth round.

Fifth Round: Stephen Strasburg (WAS, SP)

Every year there is a pitcher ranked between 40 and 60 that performs like one of the top three pitchers. Enter Stephen Strasburg. Sure, he has had his injury issues, but he also struck out 155 batters in 127 IP last season and posted an absurd 1.90 ERA and 0.754 WHIP to go with 12.5 K/9 after the all-star break. Jake Arrieta didn’t do that, and neither did Clayton Kershaw.

Sixth Round: Troy Tulowitzki (TOR, SS)

Troy Tulowitzki is still just 31 years old and only one season separated from batting .340. Sure, he struggled at the end of last season, but he was playing through injuries and should begin 2016 with full health. Last season, he was a top-20 fantasy player preseason, and there hasn’t been much that has changed since then, besides joining a much better lineup.

Seventh Round: Yasiel Puig (LAD, OF)

Don’t buy into the conservative projections on Puig, the guy is an elite talent and only 25-years-old. He is much more likely to produce numbers closer to his career 162-game-average (23 HR, .294 BA, 92 R and 12 SB) than the numbers we saw last season while he was dealing with injuries and clubhouse issues.

Eighth Round: Anthony Rendon (WAS, 2B/3B)

Yes, he is injury prone, but don’t be so quick to forget that he was an MVP candidate in 2014 when he batted .287 with 21 HR, 17 SB, 111 runs and 83 RBI. Rendon is still in his prime and fully capable of producing the same type of numbers in 2016.

Ninth Round: Adam Wainwright (STL, SP)

Don’t be concerned about Wainwright returning from an injury. The injury was to his leg, not his arm. In fact, his arm should be fresher than ever and primed to deliver one of his best seasons yet. Do not be so quick to forget that he has finished in the top three in Cy Young voting four of the last five seasons before his injury. Expect the same this season and don’t be afraid to reach for him in your draft.

Tenth Round: Maikel Franco (PHI, 3B)

As a 20-year-old in AA, Franco had 70 extra-base-hits and just 70 strikeouts. The last minor leaguer to accomplish that feat was Albert Pujols. Franco was sensational in the 80 MLB games that he was healthy, and is primed to produce 30 homers, 90 RBI and a .280 BA if he can stay healthy this season.

Bonus: Xander Bogaerts (BOS, SS)

As a 22-year-old, Boston’s young star shortstop batted .320 and scored 84 runs. This was a big step up from the .240 he batted in 2014. There is reason to believe another step in his breakout is coming, seeing that the former No. 2 overall prospect knocked 60 extra-base hits in 127 minor league games. Boegarts could see his homer run numbers double, or even triple, this season as his body fills out.
