Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers: Week 3
Tanner Roark

Tanner Roark has a pair of favorable matchups Week 3

Each week this column will scour the waiver wire and look for pitchers who are less than 30% owned and could be useful streamers for your fantasy team. All ownership percentages come from Yahoo. Please note the probable pitcher matchups could change throughout the week due to rainouts or other circumstances, so be sure to check back before picking up and starting one of these recommendations.

Sunday, April 17

Nick Tropeano – Los Angeles Angels (4% owned)
@ Minnesota Twins

The Twins’ offense has been an outright disaster to being the year. Basically, no one on the team is hitting except Joe Mauer. Minnesota, as a team, is currently batting .204 against right-handed pitching with a league-leading 30.2% strikeout rate. Tropeano was solid in his first start of the year, pitching five scoreless innings and striking out six. He’s an excellent streaming option on Sunday.

Monday, April 18

Tanner Roark – Washington Nationals (7% owned)
@ Miami Marlins

Roark has impressed in the early going this season, compiling a 2.45 ERA and seven strikeouts over his two starts. He will take on Jose Fernandez in Miami on Monday. The Marlins, thus far, have a league-average batting average against right-handed pitchers but are just 21st in the league in runs scored and 19th with an ISO of .130. Roark should be able to limit the runs scored in this one, although his showdown with Fernandez may make a win tough to earn.

Tuesday, April 19

Joe Kelly – Boston Red Sox (6% owned)
@ Tampa Bay Rays

Kelly has electric stuff (10 strikeouts in eight innings so far) but can struggle with his command (eight walks). He is a high-risk, high-reward guy to stream, but the matchup is right in this case. Tropicana Field is one of the better pitching environments in the league, and the Rays’ offense has not been impressive to begin the year. As a team, Tampa Bay is batting just .211 against right-handed pitchers. Their 20 runs scored is 21st in the league and their 27.4% strikeout rate is fifth. Stream Kelly but do yourself a favor and don’t watch him pitch. It could be nerve-wracking.

Wednesday, April 20

Nathan Eovaldi – New York Yankees (15% owned)
vs. Oakland A’s

Eovaldi throws 97-MPH heat and turned in his highest strikeout percentage of his career last season. He’s followed that up with two less than impressive starts this year. He currently has a 6.94 ERA, but he has struck out 15 batters in just 11.2 innings. The Oakland A’s come to town, one of the worst offenses in the league. When facing right-handers, they are currently striking out at a 23.1% rate, 10th highest in the league. As a team they have just a .253 wOBA, 28th in the league. Eovaldi should be able to limit run scoring much better than in his two previous starts while still bringing elite strikeout upside to this matchup.

Thursday, April 21

Cody Anderson – Cleveland Indians (8% owned)
vs. Seattle Mariners

In his first start of the year, Anderson picked up where he left off in 2015, holding the White Sox to two runs over six innings while striking out two. He will welcome the Mariners to Cleveland for his second start of the young season. Seattle has hit well to begin the year, but have faith in Anderson to continue getting batters out.

Friday, April 22

C.C. Sabathia – New York Yankees (3% owned)
vs. Tampa Bay Rays

Here we go picking on the Rays again. As mentioned above, Tampa Bay’s offense has not been good to begin the year. They have struggled as much against left-handed pitching as they have against right-handers. Against southpaws, the Rays are 22nd in the league in wOBA and 15th in ISO while batting .205. Sabathia was solid in his first start of the year, holding the Tigers to three runs in six innings. He isn’t the same pitcher he used to be, but he’s experienced enough to still get batters out.

Saturday, April 23

Tanner Roark – Washington Nationals (7% owned)
vs. Minnesota Twins

Roark gets two quality matchups this week as he will take on Minnesota to finish the week. Minnesota has been one of the weakest teams in the league against right-handed pitching. Feel free to scroll up to Sunday’s Nick Tropeano recommendation to see the numbers they have posted when there’s a right-handed pitcher on the mound. Roark could be one of the top fantasy pitchers of the week when all is said and done.
