Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers: Week 4

Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers: Week 4
Kris Medlen

Kris Medlen should be a useful streaming option this week

Each week this column will scour the waiver wire and look for pitchers who are less than 30% owned and could be useful streamers for your fantasy team. All ownership percentages come from Yahoo. Please note the probable pitcher matchups could change throughout the week due to rainouts or other circumstances, so be sure to check back before picking up and starting one of these recommendations.

Sunday, April 24

Derek Holland – Texas Rangers (23% owned)
@ Chicago White Sox

Holland has pitched well so far this season, posting a 2.70 ERA and 14 strikeouts over 16.2 innings of work. He gets a prime matchup against a disappointing White Sox offense on Sunday. Chicago, on the season when there’s a southpaw on the mound, has just a .218 batting average, .271 wOBA, and .129 ISO. The White Sox also have a 28.4% strikeout rate, second highest in the league. Holland should be able to cruise through this start.

Monday, April 25

Kendall Graveman – Oakland A’s (6% owned)
@ Detroit Tigers

Graveman is coming off one of the finest starts of his career, holding the Yankees to one run over 6.1 innings and striking out eight. Granted, the Tigers will be a tougher challenge than the scuffling Yankees were, but Graveman has proven that he can be an effective pitcher. He’s turned in quality starts in two of his three outings this year and was just two-thirds of an inning shy of logging a third quality start.

Tuesday, April 26

Rich Hill – Oakland A’s (19% owned)
@ Detroit Tigers

Hill has a tough task in taking on a Tigers offense that can be explosive, but the streaming pickings are slim on Tuesday. One nice thing about Hill is he has huge strikeout upside, reaching double-digit punchouts in two of his four starts this year. He could threaten double-digits again on Tuesday as the Tigers have the fifth-highest strikeout rate in the league against left-handed pitchers.

Wednesday, April 27

Steven Wright – Boston Red Sox (4% owned)
vs. Atlanta Braves

Wednesday is a good day to stream the knuckle-baller as he takes on one of the worst offenses in the league. Atlanta has just a .284 wOBA and .082 ISO against right-handed pitching on the year. That, combined with the fact that their best hitter, Freddie Freeman, is mired in a season-long slump, makes the Braves an attractive team to target with opposing pitching.

Thursday, April 28

Chris Bassitt – Oakland A’s (6% owned)
@ Detroit Tigers

It may appear I’m picking on the Tigers lineup, which is not the case. Thursday is a shortened slate and the streaming options under 30% owned are not plentiful. Bassitt has pitched quite well in the early going, posting a 2.79 ERA and 13 strikeouts over 19.1 innings of work. He has done a good job of limiting home runs in his career, allowing just 0.47 per nine innings.

Friday, April 29

Kris Medlen – Kansas City Royals (14% owned)
@ Seattle Mariners

Medlen has pitched well in 2016 as he currently has a 2.38 ERA and 11 strikeouts over 11.1 innings of work. He gets a boost playing in pitcher-friendly Safeco Field on Friday night. Seattle has the 10th highest strikeout rate in the league when facing right-handed pitching, so give Medlen an uptick in projected strikeouts.

Saturday, April 30

Ross Stripling – Los Angeles Dodgers (27% owned)
vs. San Diego Padres

The Padres are a dream matchup for anyone looking to stream pitchers. Against right-handed pitching, the Padres are 29th in the league in batting average and runs scored, while ranking first in the league with a 27.7% strikeout rate. Stripling has been impressive in his first three big league starts, logging a 2.65 ERA and 13 strikeouts over 17 innings of work. He’s a relatively safe streaming option to finish out the week.
