We’re nearing week 6 of the MLB season and it’s that time of the year where owners may be looking to shake things up with their roster. We’ve had some major disappointments as well as big time free agent pickups to start the season. There have also been players who have outperformed their draft value (we’re talking about you, Mark Trumbo and Aledmys Diaz).
If any of your players fall into these categories, a trade could be in your near future. Often times though, it’s nice to get some additional feedback when it comes to potential transactions. To provide that little bit of extra help or reassurance, our featured experts have named their top buy low/sell high candidates.

Q1. What one player is a sell high candidate that owners should look to move and why?
Jordan Zimmermann (SP – DET)
“Zimmermann is a great player to sell high as he’s currently 5-0 with an ERA of 0.55 across 5 starts that have covered 33 innings pitched. His K/9 of just 6.27 is rather disappointing and his LOB% of 92.3% and his BABIP allowed of .267 are both surely going to rise in the near future. That means that his ERA will also come up. While it’s a sparkling 0.55 right now, Zimmermann’s 2.72 FIP and 4.05 xFIP tell a more realistic story of how well he’s pitched. Most savvy fake gamers will take a look under the hood and realize that he’s a poor player to buy high, but others that just look at surface level stats like wins and ERA will probably overpay for Zimmermann. The numbers show that Jordan will likely be a solid SP2/3 the rest of the season and not the ace that he has appeared to be thus far; which makes him the perfect sell high candidate.”

Aaron Sanchez (SP – TOR)
“I think Sanchez is going to be a terrific young pitcher, but he has been better than I even thought thus far. I expect his innings pitched to be capped at about 160-170, so he might only have another two good months left in him this season. If other owners in your league don’t realize this, then it’s your chance to take advantage. Move Sanchez now before he starts to slow down.”

Trevor Story (SS – COL)
“My ultimate sell high player is Trevor Story. I do think that the power is legit, but the average will continue to fall. Story is currently ranked 9th overall in the Yahoo! Rankings. He isn’t going to hit 40 out like Nolan Arenado. He could produce 25-30 homers, but accompany that with 220 Ks and a .225 average. The average is already falling big time. Get out while the getting is good.”

Q2. What one player is a buy low target that you would want on your team and why?
Lorenzo Cain (OF – KC)
“Wasn’t it just a month ago when Lorenzo Cain was a third round draft pick? For the last month, Cain has been a disaster, hitting about .230 and showing little power and speed. And while Cain has been bad, it’s not like the rest of the Royals have been great either. Watch the entire team start to pick it up over the coming weeks. Get Cain while you still can.”

Troy Tulowitzki (SS – TOR)
“I’m buying the exiled Coloradoan Anti-Story, Troy Tulowitzki. He is currently ranked 264 in the Yahoo! Rankings. In his first 100 bats, he only has 16 hits, leading to a .160 average. He isn’t a .300 hitter anymore. He doesn’t run much anymore. But, he plays in a launchpad that has done wonders for careers like Bautista, Encarnacion, and Donaldson. There are plenty of runs, RBI, and homers to go around!”

Nomar Mazara (OF – TEX)
“Mazara is a great player to buy low on if you can. This is because the simple fact that Shin-Soo Choo is going to return to the Rangers starting lineup when he’s healthy and that means that Mazara could potentially be sent back down to the minor leagues. I believe that Mazara is already one of the best players on the Rangers’ 25 man roster and will surely stay in the big leagues and continue to receive regular playing time if they are serious about contending this season. While there is some risk here because Mazara could lose playing time or be sent down to the minors, there is a ton of upside to go with it; especially if the current Mazara owner in your league thinks that he has a player with an expiration date on his hands. For this simple reason, I believe that Nomar Mazara is a great buy low target in the right setting.”
