Recap
Indians’ ace goes the distance against Tigers
Corey Kluber fired a complete game shutout against the Tigers on Wednesday in a 4-0 win, striking out seven batters and allowing five hits and two walks. As evidenced by the fact that his ERA still sits at 3.35, Kluber has had his struggles this season, but he has allowed two runs or fewer in seven or more innings pitched in each of his last three starts. Justin Upton hit a double for Detroit while Nick Castellanos had two more hits to see his batting average jump to .378 on the season.
Young Met lefty dazzles against Braves
Steven Matz allowed two hits and no walks while striking out eight batters in 7 2/3 innings on Wednesday, guiding the Mets to an 8-0 win over the Braves. Lucas Duda hit two home runs for New York, bringing his season total to seven. Matz is now 4-1 this season with a 2.83 ERA and has had three scoreless starts in his last four appearances. Jhoulys Chacin allowed eight runs in 4 2/3 innings for the Braves, who only had three baserunners all game.
Huge offensive output leads Astros over Twins
Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa came a triple short of the cycle, posting identical 3-for-5 lines with three RBI and runs scored in a 16-4 win for the Astros over the Twins. Every Astros’ starter got on base. Jason Castro also had a home run and finished with four RBI in the rout. Brian Dozier hit a three-run home run for the Twins, his fourth of the season.
Nationals club Royals
All of the Nationals’ bats were on target in Wednesday’s 13-2 win over the Royals. Daniel Murphy was at the head of the attack with a 4-for-5 outing with a double, home run, three RBI, and four runs scored. Bryce Harper hit his 10th home run of the season and now has 26 RBI after his two-RBI performance against Kansas City. Every Nationals’ starter other than Danny Espinosa reached base. Kris Medlen allowed nine runs (six earned) for the Royals in two innings, and Drew Butera had the only extra-base hit against Stephen Strasburg and the Washington bullpen.
Stellar pitching performance leads Rockies over Padres
Usually known for their hitting, the Rockies blanked the Padres 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon behind eight shutout innings from Tyler Chatwood. The 26-year-old is now 4-2 this season with a 2.15 ERA after he allowed only three hits and one walk while striking out seven Padres’ batters. Cesar Vargas only allowed one run in six innings for San Diego. Brett Wallace had the only extra-base hit for San Diego and no player had more than one hit.
