Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers: Week 8

RHP Jesse Hahn gets a Sunday matchup against the Yankees, who haven’t hit well against righties this year

Each week this column will scour the waiver wire and look for pitchers who are less than 30% owned and could be useful streamers for your fantasy team. All ownership percentages come from Yahoo. Please note the probable pitcher matchups could change throughout the week due to rainouts or other circumstances, so be sure to check back before picking up and starting one of these recommendations.

All ownership percentages and statistics are current as of Friday, May 20th.

Sunday, May 22th
Jesse Hahn (OAK) vs. New York Yankees
Ownership: 3%

Hahn has a good chance to stick in the Oakland rotation after spending some time in the minors this season. The young right-hander has always had good stuff but has tended to struggle to stay healthy throughout his career. He gets a nice matchup against a New York lineup that has not performed well this season.

When facing right-handed pitching, the Yankees are ranked 22nd in wOBA, 22nd batting average and in 17th in ISO. Hahn will also benefit from playing in pitcher-friendly Oakland Coliseum.

Monday, May 23rd
Mike Pelfrey (MIN) vs. Philadelphia Phillies
Ownership: 1%

Pelfrey is a classic example of targeting the Phillies if all else fails. There isn’t much in the way of attractive streaming options on the slate today, so Pelfrey will have to do.

The veteran right-hander will benefit from an easy matchup against a Philadelphia offense that is 24th in the league in batting average, 27th in wOBA and 28th in ISO. Considering the matchup, Pelfrey has a better chance than normal at limiting the opposition’s run scoring.

Tuesday, May 24th
Ross Stripling (LAD) vs. Cincinnati Reds
Ownership: 10%

Stripling has had some growing pains in his rookie season. Fortunately for him, he has a favorable matchup against a Reds offense that will be away from their hitter-friendly home park. Cincinnati has struggled against right-handed pitching this season.

Their lineup is mostly right-handed, with two of their regular lefties being Joey Votto and Billy Hamilton. Both Votto and Hamilton have been slumping for much of the year which helps Stripling’s cause.

Wednesday, May 25th
Jake Peavy (SF) vs. San Diego Padres
Ownership: 3%

Peavy’s season-long numbers look ugly, but he has shown improvement over the past two weeks. Before his Friday, May 20th start against the Cubs, he’s had a 3.27 ERA and 11 strikeouts over 11.0 innings of work.

He also gets to take on one of the best opponents a right-handed pitcher can ask for in the Padres. When facing right-handed pitching, San Diego is last in the league in wOBA and 29th in ISO while their 25.3% strikeout rate is fourth-highest in the league.

Thursday, May 26th
Matt Wisler (ATL) vs. Milwaukee Brewers
Ownership: 16%

Wisler has been mostly solid this season, posting a 3.14 ERA and 32 strikeouts over 48.2 innings of work. While the strikeout rate isn’t great, he is taking on a Brewers team which has been the easiest in the league for right-handed pitchers to whiff.

Friday, May 27th
Adam Conley (MIA) @ Atlanta Braves
Ownership: 36%

Conley has been a pleasant surprise for fantasy owners this season as he’s striking out over a batter per inning and has a solid 3.40 ERA. The Braves’ offense, thus far, has been extremely ineffective against left-handed pitching ranking last in the league in wOBA, and ISO and sporting the eighth-highest strikeout rate in the league. Look for Conley to keep rolling in what should be an easy matchup for him.

Saturday, May 28th
Wade Miley (SEA) vs. Minnesota Twins
Ownership: 11%

As of Friday, May 20th, Miley has posted a 2.00 ERA over his past four starts and gets a great matchup against a Twins offense that is great for targeting with opposing pitching. Minnesota, against lefties, is in the bottom two in the league in batting average, wOBA and ISO while striking out at the seventh-highest rate. Miley is a great streaming option for Saturday as he should have no trouble with Minnesota in this start.
