Matt Carpenter and the Cardinals went down to their last out before storming back Monday

While Monday’s schedule was lacking a bit for quantity that did not mean that it lacked for quality. There were amazing catches, extra-inning games, and huge comebacks. A five-run comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning will open this daily update for August 9, 2016.

Recap

Cardinals snatch victory from Reds
After going down 4-0 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Cardinals stormed back to score five runs in the inning and beat the Reds 5-4. Matt Carpenter opened the scoring for St. Louis with a two-RBI single, part of a 2-for-5 night with a double, before Brandon Moss walked with the bases loaded to tie the game and Yadier Molina was hit by a pitch to win the game for the Cardinals. Zack Cozart finished 2-for-5 with a double, run scored, and two RBI while Billy Hamilton finished 1-for-4 with a walk and two stolen bases for Cincinnati.

Giants beat Marlins in 14 innings
In a back-and-forth game that was billed as a pitcher’s duel between Jose Fernandez and Johnny Cueto, the Giants scored in the top of the 14th inning and held off the Marlins, 8-7. Brandon Crawford had the game-winning hit in the 14th and finished 7-for-8 with a double, triple, run scored, and two RBI while Buster Posey and Brandon Belt each had two RBI for San Francisco. Christian Yelich finished 3-for-6 with a double, home run, two runs scored, and four RBI while Martin Prado finished 2-for-4 with a double, home run, two RBI, and three runs scored for Miami.

Mariners blank Tigers
Hisashi Iwakuma allowed five hits and one walk in seven scoreless innings, striking out eight batters in a 3-0 win for the Mariners over the Tigers. Iwakuma (13-7) has now won seven straight home starts. Nelson Cruz finished 2-for-3 with a double and run scored, and Kyle Seager finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and RBI for Seattle. Michael Fulmer (9-3) allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings, striking out six batters, and Ian Kinsler finished 1-for-3 with a walk for Detroit.

Dodgers club Phillies
The Dodgers clubbed seven extra-base hits and jumped on the Phillies for five runs in the first inning of a 9-4 win on Monday night. Corey Seager went 2-for-4 with two home runs, Chase Utley hit a home run in his first game against his former team, Joc Pederson finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI, and Yasmani Grandal finished 2-for-3 with a walk, double, RBI and three runs scored for the Dodgers. Zach Eflin (3-5) allowed seven runs on seven hits in three innings while Tommy Joseph hit a home run and Cameron Rupp finished 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI for Philadelphia.

Blue Jays sneak past Rays
Edwin Encarnacion clubbed a home run and drove in three runs to spearhead the Blue Jays in a 7-5 win over the Rays on Monday night. Encarnacion finished 3-for-5 while Jose Bautista drove in three runs, finishing 2-for-4 with a double, and Devon Travis finished 4-for-5 with a triple, RBI, and two runs scored for Toronto. Logan Forsythe finished 3-for-4 with a walk, home run, and two runs scored while Brad Miller finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored, and two RBI for Tampa Bay.

What to Watch For

NL Cy Young candidate Max Scherzer will face off with Trevor Bauer as the Nationals and Indians meet in a matchup of playoff contenders. Scherzer has struck out 10 batters or more in six of his last 10 starts, striking out no fewer than six batters in each of his last 10 appearances, and has a 2.87 ERA and 0.93 WHIP this season. Bauer has only allowed five runs or fewer in three of his last five starts, but had allowed two runs or fewer in each of his preceding five appearances. Chris Sale, Rick Porcello, and Zack Greinke will also pitch today.
