Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers: Week 19

Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers: Week 19
Dan Straily

Dan Straily has a pair of solid matchups this week

Each week this column will scour the waiver wire and look for pitchers who are less than 30% owned and could be useful streamers for your fantasy team. All ownership percentages come from Yahoo.

Please note the probable pitcher matchups could change throughout the week due to rainouts or other circumstances, so be sure to check back before picking up and starting one of these recommendations. All ownership percentages and statistics are current as of Friday, August 5.

Sunday, August 7
Dan Straily (CIN) @ Pittsburgh Pirates
(Ownership: 19%)

Straily has been extremely consistent this season, turning in six straight quality starts. The right-hander has a favorable matchup against a Pirates team that has really been struggling on offense over the past month. Add in the big park boost that Straily gets playing in pitcher-friendly PNC Park instead of his homer-happy home field and Straily shapes up as a solid, safe streaming option to start off your week. He is also lined up as a two-start streamer this week as he has another great matchup on Saturday, so be sure to keep him around after Sunday’s start.

Monday, August 8
R.A. Dickey (TOR) vs. Tampa Bay Rays
(Ownership: 16%)

Dickey is having another mediocre season slinging his knuckleball for the Blue Jays, but he should be able to piece together a useful outing against the Rays on Monday. Tampa Bay is among the worst teams in the league when it comes to hitting right-handed pitching. They rank 29th in batting average, 23rd in wOBA, and have a 24.1% strikeout rate, fourth-highest in the league. Backed by a strong offense, Dickey should be in line for the win when all is said and done.

Tuesday, August 9
Brandon Finnegan (CIN) @ St. Louis Cardinals
(Ownership: 10%)

Finnegan just faced the Cardinals at home on Thursday night and held them scoreless over six innings of work. The young southpaw struck out four batters and walked none. The lack of free passes was most encouraging as that has been the main issue plaguing Finnegan during his young career. He will attempt to have success against the Cards a second time in a row, this time in a much more pitcher-friendly environment in St. Louis. He is a worthy stream against a St. Louis offense that has struggled against lefties for a few seasons now.

Wednesday, August 10
Yovani Gallardo (BAL) @ Oakland Athletics
(Ownership: 5%)

Gallardo is a streamer for deep leagues as not much about his performance this season has screamed “start me” in fantasy leagues. He does have a super matchup against an A’s team that has struggled against right-handed pitching this season and recently traded away Josh Reddick, one of their top lefty bats. Gallardo will also enjoy a big park boost as he escapes hitter-friendly Camden Yards to pitch in the spacious Oakland Coliseum.

Thursday, August 11
Jose Berrios (MIN) vs. Houston Astros
(Ownership: 22%)

Berrios showed marked improvement in his first start since being recalled from the minors, holding a righty-mashing Indians team to three runs over six innings while striking out five. Berrios is one of the more highly-regarded pitching prospects in the game and should become a dominant starter in due time, possibly as early as Thursday. He gets a matchup against an Astros’ offense that, at the time of writing, has been struggling mightily at the plate for a few weeks now. If the Astros catch fire by the time you read this, then perhaps reconsider Berrios as a streamer. Either way, he will have elite strikeout upside against a free-swinging Astros team.

Friday, August 12
Homer Bailey (CIN) @ Milwaukee Brewers
(Ownership: 16%)

Bailey will be making his second start of the season and it will come against a favorable opponent in the Brewers. Milwaukee has not been very good against right-handers this season, ranking 23rd in batting average, 20th in wOBA, and ranking first in the league with a 25.9% strikeout rate. Bailey still has a bit of strikeout upside of his own and that will be augmented by the free-swinging ways of the Brewers.

Saturday, August 13
Dan Straily (CIN) @ Milwaukee Brewers
(Ownership: 19%)

Straily is back with another fine matchup on tap for him. See the blurb above on Homer Bailey to check out Milwaukee’s ineptness against right-handed pitching. Then go and make sure Straily is on your roster now so you can stream him twice this week.
