RBBC Review: Week 2

RBBC Review: Week 2

"<a

Well, we’ve already got two weeks in the books and many running back situations around the league aren’t any less clear. At this point in the NFL nearly every team employs some sort of running back by committee. As fantasy analysts our job is to look behind the production and account for snap counts, all-purpose touches, and talent to determine which backs are worth owning and which are worth staying away from. Without further ado here is an update on the most important committees to monitor.

Atlanta Falcons
So this one continues to be a full-blown committee. Devonta Freeman is still the “1A” to Tevin Coleman’s “1B” and out snapped him 36-30 in Week 2. However, for the second straight week, he was outscored by the second-year back from Indiana. Freeman led the team in rushing, taking the ball 17 times for 93 yards. Coleman, meanwhile, received 12 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown while adding two receptions for 25 yards. The most concerning part for Freeman owners is he did not record a catch. Entering the season it was believed he had third down and goal line duties locked up. He should still dominate goal-line touches for now but neither back can be viewed as more than a high-end flex for Week 3.

Dallas Cowboys
This situation shouldn’t be considered a full-blown committee the way Atlanta is thought of, but it’s a situation worth monitoring. After a lackluster Week 1 performance, Ezekiel Elliott rebounded somewhat in Week 2, taking 21 carries for 83 yards and a touchdown. He also caught two passes for four yards. While he out snapped Alfred Morris 43-10 it should be noted that he did not receive a carry following his second fumble of the day. Morris had just seven yards on five carries but notched the game-winning touchdown. As long as “Zeke” is healthy Morris doesn’t have stand-alone value but he is arguably fantasy football’s top handcuff.

Oakland Raiders
Latavius Murray has hit pay dirt in each of the season’s first two weeks with short touchdown runs. He was also effective with his Week 2 touches, rushing eight times for 57 yards and catching six passes for 44 yards. However, the 14 touches are somewhat of a concern. DeAndre Washington, Jalen Richard, and Jamize Olawale combined for 18 total touches. Despite the timeshare, Murray’s effectiveness keeps him in the RB2 discussion but it wouldn’t be a bad idea to try and sell high on him.

Seattle Seahawks
Christine Michael out snapped Thomas Rawls 47-16. A major reason for this was Rawls leaving the game due to injury. He looked awful before exiting and rushed seven times for -7 yards. Michael, meanwhile, received 10 carries for 60 yards. Rawls was thought to be the lead back entering Week 2 but that has completely changed. He is expected to play Sunday in a good spot against San Francisco but can’t be trusted as a fantasy starter. Fire Michael up as an RB2 for the time being.
