Fantasy Basketball Waiver Wire Pickups: Week 22

With rosters settled and only the playoffs in front of us, this week’s waiver wire pickups is populated solely with young players getting significant minutes for team’s out of the playoff picture.

(All owner percentages are for ESPN leagues as of March 22nd)

Richaun Holmes (PF/C – PHI) 44%
With Nerlens Noel (C – DAL), Joel Embiid (C – PHI), Jahlil Okafor (C – PHI), Tiago Splitter (C – PHI), and Ersan Ilyasova (PF – ATL) either traded or suffering from injuries, the Philadelphia 76ers have turned to second-year power forward Richaun Holmes for long stretches as their sole big man on the court. Holmes’ efficiency will keep him getting impactful minutes throughout the rest of season, even as Okafor and Splitter return to the active roster. The big man from Bowling Green is shooting 57 percent on the season and 63 percent in March (including 37 percent from three in 1.5 attempts per game). His per-36 minute numbers (from Basketball Reference) show Holmes as a double-double talent when given starters minutes and is a solid add for the rest of the season.

Marquese Chriss (PF – PHO) 28%
Marquese Chriss is only 19 years old, so it’s unrealistic to expect consistent production, but he is getting consistent minutes on a Phoenix Suns team whose focus the rest of the season will be player development. Recently, he’s been using those minutes well, averaging 13.0 points per game, along with 5.6 rebounds, 1.9 blocks, and just under a steal a game in March. Chriss has also managed to shoot 53.1 percent from the floor and 44.7 from downtown (1.5 threes a game) during the month. Those shooting percentages will most definitely drop, but for a fantasy team needing a big swing heading into the playoffs, that multi-category impact may be worth the inconsistencies.

Ivica Zubac (C – LAL) 19%
A young center on a team more concerned with draft positioning than playoff seeding, Ivica Zubac is making the most of the minutes given to him in the absence of Timofey Mozgov (C – LAL). The 20-year-old is shooting 62 percent in March while scoring 13 points and grabbing 5.5 rebounds in 23 minutes per game. However, Zubac played at least 29 minutes in three of his past five games, and will likely see that number trend upwards as the Lakers shove more minutes his way. As with everyone on this week’s list, Zubac’s age makes him a tricky bet for consistent production, but he has the talent and the minutes to be productive down the stretch.

Allen Crabbe (SG – POR) 9%
A man with a singular skill, Allen Crabbe is worthy of a pickup for any fantasy team chasing three-points made. The 24-year-old shooting guard is averaging just over two threes made per game in March while shooting 42.7 percent from behind the arc. Crabbe might stumble into a handful of rebounds (2.8 rebounds per game this season, 3.6 per game in March), but you shouldn’t expect much else as his assists, steals, and blocks numbers all hover at or below one per game. Still, he’s probably the best long distance shooter this widely available.
