Before Lucas Giolito broke onto the prospect scene as one of the top young pitchers in baseball, he was a high-risk, high-reward kid with a blazing fastball and an injury history. Some lists ranked him barely within their top 100, while others were too skeptical to put their name behind the Nationals’ first-round pick. We know the rest of the story: he blew away expectations, answered all the doubters and was considered a consensus top 5 prospect before his Major League debut last season. This is the story of all former top-five prospects besides a few phenoms like Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg. Today, I’ll introduce you to nine prospects who aren’t currently graded in any rankings’ top five, but have strong odds of appearing there within the next few years. Beyond that, I’ll name 22 other prospects that I believe have at least a 10% chance of being named a top 5 prospect some day.
