DraftKings MLB Value Plays: Monday (4/17)

DraftKings MLB Value Plays: Monday (4/17)

Happy Patriots Day! That means Boston will be hosting morning baseball at 11:05 am. For the ease of analysis, and the fact that the next game doesn’t start until 7:00 pm, I’m going to skip over Rays-BoSox and focus on the nine-game main slate. We have two full weeks of baseball in the books as the young season continues on. Let’s run through some interesting value plays to help you afford the pricey arms and bats you want to use today.

Pitcher

Ivan Nova (PIT): $7,500 @ STL
Nova is a slight road underdog versus an absolutely dreadful Cardinals offense coming off being swept by the Yankees. The latest Ray Searage project isn’t exactly mowing hitters down, but he’s not walking anyone either. The Cards are just bad right now, striking out nearly 27% of the time versus RHP, and Nova is getting a great match up here. Nova should be able to coast through stretches of the St. Louis lineup with limited damage.

Jordan Montgomery (NYY): vs. CWS
Montgomery, a (-149) favorite, looked expectedly like a rookie in his first ever start. He was up and down, fanning seven Rays in just four IP, but also needed 89 pitches to get through it before giving way to the pen. He’ll get a sub-par White Sox team today who struggles with lefties. Chicago has just a .236 wOBA and less than a 21% hard contact rate against LHP. They also whiff more and walk less, all the trends you want here.

Other Notables

Catcher

J.T. Realmuto (MIA): $3,400 @ SEA
Realmuto has been batting in the two hole for the Marlins. If the trend continues today, he deserves a lot of attention as arguably the most athletic catcher in the game. His speed is always a bonus when it comes to potential DK points when he’s able to take the extra base and steal the occasional bag. What’s more, his bat was on fire before he got sick and missed two games over the weekend. He was back Sunday, and so was his bat. Play him before the price inflates.

Other Notables

First Base

Eric Thames (MIL): $3,800 @ CHC
Like Realmuto, Thames will most likely be the chalk today. He’s gone yard the last four games and is criminally underpriced. That’s going to be a theme for hitters today. His salary has not caught up with his ridiculous power production, and he’s as hot as any hitter right now. Until the price goes up, it makes all the sense in the world to roster Thames. Fading him may be wise in playing GPPs, though.

Other Notables

Second Base

Adam Frazier (PIT): $3,000 @ STL
Frazier was stellar in the minor leagues. Since getting to the bigs, the Pirates have been showing more faith in him. He was even in the lineup versus a lefty on Sunday, and rewarded the decision by going deep. Frazier’s primary appeal is his role in drawing the leadoff spot against right-handed pitching. He gets a righty Monday, likely putting him atop the Bucs order once again. His price is excellent, he’s showing good patience at the plate thus far, and his on-base ability (.332 wOBA) and opportunity put him in a good spot.

Other Notables

Third Base

Jake Lamb (ARI): $3,700 @ LAD
In 34 plate appearances this young season, Lamb has a robust .310 ISO and 1.160 OPS against right-handed pitching due to some favorable luck. That being said, it’s not much of a surprise, given his marks of .280/.898 last season. His career .351 wOBA & 115 wRC+ versus righties are also good reasons to put Lamb in play in a relatively slim field of options at the hot corner today.

Other Notables

Shortstop

Enrique Hernandez (LAD): $2,700 vs ARI
Most likely in the lineup after a Logan Forsythe injury, “Kike” will likely see some action today versus a lefty. While not ultra-impressive, the .201 ISO/.358 wOBA/130 wRC+ against southpaws is enough to warrant consideration as a good punt play here. For $2,700, it’s the cheapest play that gives you upside at short today. Otherwise, you’re going to have to go move down to Erick Aybar or one of the Marlins fill-ins.

Other Notables

Outfield

Marcell Ozuna (MIA): $3,500 @ SEA
The mid-$3,000 band of OF salaries on DK today offers a plethora of guys that have been hot to start 2017 to say the least. Let’s start with Ozuna, who is an elite bargain today and a good bet to be highly owned in cash games. To start the season, Ozuna is scorching, hitting .404 with five bombs and a healthy 1.198 OPS. Currently riding a six-game hit streak, he’s not destroying lefties, but he’s shown consistency the past two seasons with repeat .384 wOBA versus them in addition to a wRC+ above 140.

Nomar Mazara (TEX): $3,600 @ OAK
Mazara is insanely cheap today and is most likely to be somewhat chalky as well. What’s even crazier is his numbers versus righties this season. How does this sound…1.173 OPS/.368 ISO/.498 wOBA/229 wRC+. Need any more convincing? Plug him in and ride the hot hand. The only problem you may have is deciding to play him or Ozuna for $100 difference. You can always hedge one with the other if you’re building more than one cash lineup.

Manuel Margot (SD): $3,300 @ ATL
Margo would fall into the bargain bin group as well. He’s not quite producing at the rate of Ozuna or Mazara. Maybe he needs a Z in his last name? Either way, most expected the asset of speed out of Margot, but he’s already connected on three long balls in the season’s first two weeks. Given this info, some would say he’s playing a little over his head. But keep in mind he’s also carrying a .273 BABIP, so more residency on the base paths can be expected somewhat soon.
