Pitchers

Matt Harvey (NYM): $8,300 vs. PHI
Matt Harvey gave both Mets’ fans and fantasy owners reason to hope in his first start this season, throwing a quality start of 6 2/3 innings with 4 K’s. He allowed 2 earned runs off only 4 hits.  Based on Harvey’s advanced metrics from 2016, the argument could be made that bad luck and injuries had more to do with his reduced production than any loss of talent or form.  His strong first start in 2017 seems to indicate that the Dark Knight may very well have returned, and for only $8,300 vs. the Phillies, owners should flash their bat lights in the sky tonight.

Joe Musgrove (HOU): $7,700 vs SEA
Musgrove is a price point pick, as last year he turned out to be very dependable and nearly always reached value around this price point.  His 2016 numbers included a k/9 of 7.98, 21% a GB% of 43.4% and respectable Fips.  He gave up 2 runs on five hits in five innings in his first start of 2017.  While not spectacular, such numbers won’t sink your GPP lineup, and that’s often what you need from your SP2.  However, he does offer K upside in addition to his ability to manage contact.

Other Notables:

Catcher

Catcher is the traditional punt spot, and there are several players at $3,000 or less that make sense to play to save payroll tonight.

Robinson Chirinos (TEX): $2,700  vs LAA
Chirinos has legitimate Home Run power and has already gone yard twice this season.  A solid chance for a Home Run from a $2700 catcher is exactly what we look for in a logical punt play.

Jett Brandy (MIL): $2,400  vs. TOR
Brandy has HR power and the splits going his way in a hitter’s stadium.  What more can you ask for from a $2400 play?

Other Notables:

First Base

Adam Lind (WAS): $3,200 vs STL
If you can’t afford the top plays at first base, or if you are looking for a contrarian/low ownership option, take Lind if he plays.  His power splits and powerful offense surrounding him (Washington currently has  Vegas run total of 4.7) make it easy for him to hit value at this price.

David Freese (PIT): $3,000 vs CIN
Like Jordy Mercer below, Freese is simply in a great MLB DFS spot. He is batting 5th for a team with a Vegas run total of 4.7 and a facing a pitcher who looks like a gas can.  For $3000, you can’t ask for much more

Other Notables:

Second Base

Dee Gordon (MIA): $4,100 vs. ATL
As his FantasyPros page points out Gordon is 9-for-22, with three RBI, and four runs scored, one HR and three stolen bases since the season began.  He has a .634 OPS this season, and a solid wOBA split against righties and should be able to run against Colon if he gets on base.  His lineup spot and stolen base upside make the price worth the risk.

Brandon Drury (ARI): $2,900 vs SFG
Drury has too much Home Run power to pass up at this price, especially with a 15 day 40 HH% an Exit Velocity of 90.

Other Notables:

Third Base

Joey Gallo (TEX): $3,200 @ LAA
Gallo has produced everything so far this season: 2HR,4 R, 7RBI’s even a stolen base.  That is a good upside gamble for a very low price.

Jake Lamb (ARI): $3,300 @ SFG
Lamb has started the season very cold, which is one of the reasons he’s a value play today.  The HR and extra base power he displayed last year weren’t a mirage, and he has the splits going his way today.  Lamb was a regular 4000-5000 a day player last season; pick up the discount while you can.

Other Notables:

Shortstop

Stephen Drew (WAS): $2,800 vs. STL
There have been moments throughout his career when Drew has been a true power hitter, with an ISO over .200, and most of that production has come against Lefties like he faces tonight.  You need cheap home runs to win GPP’s, and Drew with his 2016 ISO splits 0f .259 in a productive Washington offense is the very definition of a logical punt.

Jordy Mercer (PIT): $3,000 vs CIN
Sometimes, when picking punts, you just have to rely on the strategic fundamentals of MLB DFS.  Mercer is leading off for a team with a current total of 4.7 runs and facing off a pitcher with a price tag under 5k and who failed to make it past three innings his first time out.

Other Notables:

Outfield

Jay Bruce (NYM): $3,700 vs PHI
Bruce came into the season with a plan to increase his fly ball production in 2017, and so far it has paid dividends with 4 HR, 8 runs and 6 RBI’s (not to mention 6 walks).  His wRC+ of 234 will not last all season but grab it, and Bruce for $3,700 while you can

Andrew Benintendi (BOS): $3,900 vs. BAL
The rookie is living up to the hype for Boston, with an ISO of .234 and a SLG of .543 versus righty arms. He faces one today in Baltimore’s Dylan Bundy, which is why FantasyPros ranks his matchup at 4 out of 5 stars. This makes him too good to pass up at this price.

Nomar Mazara (TEX): $3,300 vs LAA
Tonight, the wind is blowing out to right field for the lefty power hitter. He matches up against Tyler Skaggs, who was torched in his first start. Mazara should come with low ownership because of the lefty-lefty matchup, but he has had a huge start and is probably still underpriced.
