Grading Fantasy Baseball Trades: Javier Baez, Paul Goldschmidt, Brandon Drury

It’s that time again – time for our weekly Grading Trades column, and you know what that means. That’s right, we get to take a look at this week’s trades that went down across the fantasy baseball world and decide how much or how little we like them. We also provide feedback on trade offers you might be a bit torn on. As always, thanks to all who submitted their trades to us and keep on keepin’ on.

I have an offer on the table: receive Javier Baez for Masahiro Tanaka. This is a points based dynasty league so home run hitters are the most valuable hitters and strike out pitchers are the most valuable pitchers. Should I accept this offer?

There was an abundance of concern that Baez wouldn’t be getting regular playing time in the stacked Chicago Cubs lineup to warrant a high draft cost. Well, leave it to Cubs Manager Joe Maddon to make some people feel a little silly. Not only has he found a way to get Baez into the first seven games this season for the team, he’s also keeping a close watch over Baez’s development.

What that means, in my humble opinion, is that Maddon really likes Baez for his versatility, the way he treats the game, and the fact he’s someone that takes pride in his defense. It also helps that Baez has easy 25-home run potential. Essentially, Baez kind of seems like a Ben Zobrist type player who has more pop, though a bit less on-base ability. Baez is also just 24 years of age.

So yes – you should absolutely accept this trade offer. Baez offers far greater long-term potential than Tanaka and will also maintain much higher trade value over the coming seasons.

Standard 5×5 Yahoo league. Someone offered me Paul Goldschmidt for Blake Snell, Todd Frazier, and Aaron Judge. Should I accept this trade? We’re in a keeper league with 14 teams.

Can I start off by saying this isn’t a terrible offer for Goldschmidt? The players you would receive in return are certainly serviceable fantasy players – at least Frazier and Snell are at this point. Jury’s still out on Judge, who has loads of potential in that massive bat of his.

That said, there’s no way I could truly consider pulling the trigger on this unless I was magically losing ownership of Goldy the following season anyway. Goldschmidt is one of those rare fantasy players who hits for power, high average, high OBP, steals bases, and can drive in 90+ runs on the regular in even the worst lineup. Throw in the fact that he is still in his prime and plays a position that isn’t as deep as some think it is, and it’s a no-brainer you keep him.

IF, and that’s a big IF, you were to trade Goldy in a keeper league you should look for either a straight challenge trade – a one-for-one where you trade your best player for another teams’ best player or even a two-for-one where you get a replacement bat that has potential and is probably more a top-25 offensive producer along with a very projectable prospect like a Manuel Margot, Eloy Jimenez, or Cody Bellinger.

What is Brandon Drury’s trade value? I could really use someone with multi-position flexibility and I love the crap out of him as a player for his power potential and the home ballpark he plays in, but I have no clue what to offer the owner who has him. I’m in a 14-team keeper league, standard 5×5.

So I’m not the only one!

I had the good fortune of sniping Drury in my auction league for a whopping $1, and I’ve already had several league mates try to lowball me in an effort to pry him off my roster. If this league mate of yours had the foresight to draft him, especially when he was going undrafted in a third of leagues then he likely has high hopes for Drury. Even today his consensus ownership floats between 60% and 66%.

Without knowing what the needs are of the team that has Drury rostered it’s difficult for me to really provide much advice on what you should offer him in exchange. Plus, with Drury off to a scorching hot start and tantalizing owners with thoughts of a cycle last week (he hit a single, double, and triple in his three at-bats against the A’s) his value has only gone up.

What I will say is this – I view Drury as a guy that could hit 22 to 25 home runs this season and rack up the counting stats given his everyday status at second base for the Diamondbacks. That lineup also offers him plenty of protection, so when opposing teams have to decide who to pitch to they’ll likely choose Drury over Yasmany Tomas or Jake Lamb. There’s also a strong possibility that Drury could find himself hitting in the two-hole, currently occupied by David Peralta, if he continues to rake.

If this owner needs a closer, I’d see if a lower-end closer will get a deal done. If he or she could use pitching then maybe someone like Jake Odorizzi would get it done. You just need to look at his roster, figure out what his or her needs are and make a serious first offer so you don’t look clueless because in a keeper league this guy is gonna be worth it.
