5 Deep Hitters to Pick Up (Fantasy Baseball)

We’re continuing the series of weekly articles taking a quick look at hitters for you to consider adding in deep mixed leagues and AL/NL-only formats. All of these players have less than 10% ownership.

Cameron Maybin (OF – LAA) 4%
It took a while for the 30-year-old to adjust to life in Anaheim, but at the moment Maybin is tearing it up. Over the last seven days, he slashed .450/.607/.600 with three extra-base hits and three stolen bases. Interestingly, he walked eight times to just three strikeouts.

With Yunel Escobar sidelined with a strained hamstring, Maybin has been hitting at the top of the order ahead of Kole Calhoun, Mike Trout and, until his injury, Albert Pujols. This is the form that was anticipated from Maybin after last season’s .315 AVG and .801 OPS with 15 stolen bases in 94 games for the Tigers.

Lonnie Chisenhall (OF – CLE) 4%
To say that the Indians’ right fielder is hot is an understatement. He has a 1.511 OPS over the last seven games. During the last week, the 28-year-old has launched four home runs with eight RBIs and has more walks than strikeouts.

The promotion of the Indians’ highly-rated prospect Bradley Zimmer has shifted Chisenhall from his occasional employment in center field over to left. While he sees the ball this well (and with Brandon Guyer and Abraham Almonte both on the DL), expect Chisenhall to continue to get the majority of at-bats against both left- and right-handed starters.

Mark Canha (1B/OF – OAK) 1%
2016 was a washout for Mark Canha. He started off slowly hitting .122 in 16 games before undergoing season-ending hip surgery. 2017 started with a demotion to Triple-A after six games, but he is back and looking to make the most of this opportunity.

The 28-year-old has played eight games this month (27 plate appearances) with three home runs and an emphatic .440 batting average. He stole playing time from Rajai Davis in center and Matt Joyce in right, although there is the possibility of at-bats at first base with Yonder Alonso banged up.

Allen Cordoba (SS – SD) 1%
The rule-5 pick is only seeing limited playing time for the Padres but is slashing .300/.364/.467 in May with a home run, a triple and three walks to six strikeouts. Claimed by San Diego from the Cardinals, Cordoba is only 21-years-old, and until this season, the highest level he had reached was the Appalachian League. Impressive young shortstops are exceptionally valuable, so the Padres will endeavor to keep him on their 25-man roster all year to prevent his return to the Cardinals.

Padres manager Andy Green wants Cordoba to become their super-utility player, giving him starts at shortstop, left field and center. Given his current level of play, it is increasingly difficult to leave him out of the lineup, and Cordoba has been pushed up to second or third in the batting order in three of the last four games.

Trevor Plouffe (3B – OAK) 1%
The 30-year-old started at third base for the Athletics in 15 of their 18 games in May. He is slashing .314/.386/.510 with 10 runs, two home runs, four RBIs and a stolen base. Plouffe usually hits towards the bottom of the Athletics’ lineup but the .386 OBP is not going unnoticed and he has been pushed up to second on a couple of occasions.

Don’t expect exciting fantasy production from Plouffe but for a player with just 1% ownership, he has outperformed many higher profile third basemen in May (Yulieski Gurriel, Nicholas Castellanos, Jose Ramirez).
